Does anyone think this is actually going to happen this weekend? (Please say no!) I'm freaking out b/c many of our guests work w/ the nypd / papd - including FI's entire side of the bridal party! Not to mention I have a bridesmaid from DC who wants to stay at her boyfriends' parents' house in NJ and was planning on taking the trains there friday night after the rehearsal.

Re: MTA strike?
It's looking pretty real as of right now. If they don't reach a negotiation as of Thursday Midnight...then yes, they'll strike.

If they do strike it will s*ck. But to go to NJ wouldn't you be taking the path train. I think that will still be running. You should double check.

I don't know if she is taking NJTransit or Path - she was waiting on directions from her boyfriend's dad about how he commutes. I don't even know - is NJTransit part of MTA?

PATH trains will still be running, they are operated by the Port Authority. Your friend who is staying in NJ will be able to get there via NJ Transit, PATH (stops one block from Penn) and LIRR but, I'm sure it won't be as smooth as it could be.
It looks real right now but, I'm hoping, that something will be figured out in the 11th hour to fix this!!! Especially since the weather isn't supposed to be great Thurs night into Fri am.

Re: MTA strike?
NJ trains will still run, as well as LIRR and MetroNorth.
Keep the faith...hopefully it will work out.

Re: MTA strike?
It will all work out ok. This happened two years ago or so, all the news channels had a countdown to the strike and then....it never happened.

Re: MTA strike?
My FH works for LIRR and he says it's pretty real. They are handing out pamphlets to passengers letting them know that a strike is highly likely and to be prepared for schedule changes. I hope it works out for you...

I don't know... I really think they'll manage to work it out at the last hour.
did you hear that NYC is suing each transit worker $25K A DAY if they strike?
I have mixed feelings about the whole situation. They deserve a fair contract. The MTA wants to stop benefits for new employees and cut sick time. that’s BS with a 1 BILLION $ surplus

I agree w/you.
It is pretty real...and it's well deserved in my opinion. It's complete BS the way city workers are treated with their pay. The surplus should be used to avoid the entire situation.
Yes, it'll be inconvenient for us, but honestly, it's well deserved, and we'll have to sacrifice.

Re: MTA strike?
They had a rally yesterday in front on the Hyatt on East 42nd street yesterday - I'm around Lex and 43rd and I could hear the echoes - they are fired up and I don't think that we should be too optimistic.
If they do strike and you must car pool, remember that below 96th street, between 5am and 11am you must have FOUR people in your car.

Path and LIRR will not be affected-
I don't know about Path, but the LIRR is charging a higher rate if there is a strike. 'A Special Strike Fare', I guess to discourage travel...

It always seems imminent, but in the end it will work. I hope the workers get a fair shake.

Re: MTA strike?
i don't think it will happen, they will probably come to some sort of agreement at 11:59, or they would be willing to extend the talk.

I don't think they're charging a higher fare. I think they're charging $3 to those who normally take the bus/subway, but will need to take the LIRR to/from Jamaica. The fare is higher than the bus, but not higher than a LIRR ticket. The LIRR is accommodating those who are affected by the strike, not discouraging travel by charging everyone a higher price.
