Music dilemma-help

Ok so i have a big irish family and a bunch of them coming over here from ireland for the wedding which i am thrilled about. As far as the music goes, we are having a band and playing really popular and recognizable 60's,70's and 80's music. Heres the problem, my moms upset with me that i dont want more irish music played. Like im insulting the people that flew over here. I have a few songs thrown in but she doesnt feel its enough. BUt , my problem is that i have 150 other guests that wouldnt know this music if it was played and definitely wouldnt dance to it!! I just want to appeal to everyone at the wedding and my mothers taking it like im embarrassed of my heritage or something. Am i wrong for this? What would you girls do? tia

honestly you think if your going to fly from one country to another you want to sit down and hear all the campy songs from your country - NO! I did a lot of NEW irish songs and some old ones for ceremony and mixed it in to the cocktail hour (can read my review for songs) and then after that NOTHING irish at all.

People want to come to dance and have fun - irish folk/ballads are meant to sit by the bar and drink and sing along not for a NY/LI wedding.

After our wedding we had a after party and half the family sang and drank with us. We have very musical family and we sang a range of irish ballads and entertained half the hotel's guests IoI

I think you compromised you do have some music maybe go over it again with your mom- she may see you do have it in there. are the people coming over older or younger- if younger may not really care about the Irish music?? there is so much to take in consideration.. but it is YOUR final choice!!!

My Fh's mother is very Irish.. Im only having two songs tops played.. the Irish songs aren't really 'dancing' songs...I do have a large Italian family too..so we are throwing in some Italian songs too..probably more than Irish..

I would probably tell my mom that the music selection we picked is not final, and that the band has a huge list of Irish songs that they could play. So if during the reception they see a lot of people on the dance floor having fun when they play Irish songs, they'll play more. I'd also tell her that she can feel free to request more songs if she likes.

Then, when you send in your song list...tell the band that they can take requests, but to run the Irish song requests by you first or to use their own discretion if they think someone requests a song that no one will dance to. I think our band did an awesome job of reading the crowd and played songs that pretty much got everyone on the dance floor the entire night.

HTH!!

I totally agree with your decsion. My FH is greek and his family wanted more greek music played but I put my foot down. There are tons more not greek then greek and I have heard from guests that have been to very ethinic weddings that aren't those ethnicities that they just sat there....people can't all relate and i think it hinders the fun. i think a few songs is great! Thats what we are doing a couple songs here and there...and an irish song for my dad and a polka song for my mom and we have covered the bases. I don't think it's disrespecting your family coming in...I think a well rounded party is perfect!

I was just going to say that. DH's relatives came over from Ireland as well....they hear their music at home, they don't need to hear it here. We had the bagpipers come and play a set of 3 songs at the reception while salad was served, and we had some irish ballads playing during the prelude, but that was all.

maybe you could let the DJ or band know about this, and ask that they have a few more Irish songs on hand in case the Irish songs are really popular and you want to prolong the dancing...let it be up to the discretion of the DJ so that way it's out of your hands
