Although many of us dislike those songs and their accompanying dances, they do get a lot of people up dancing. I went to a wedding recently that had one of the best bands I have ever heard. However, they were instructed not to play any of those hokey songs, and no-one over the age of 30 got up and danced all night. So, even though the songs may make your skin crawl, you may want to include them for the benefit of your guests. But, if you really hate them, leave them out, it is your day after all.

Yikes Elizabeth, that was the Club Med Anthem 'Hands Up' lol. In addition to you and Karen I personally do not care gor the Electric Slide either..no offense to anyone that likes it.

I agree with Karen's suggestion of giving the DJ some ranges and then let him gauge how the guests respond.

I know what you mean, alot of people dance to them and really seem to have a good time. But if you don't want the group songs, I think if you keep your crowd in mind while specifying your music, you can get a lot of people dancing by making sure they all hear stuff they will recognize...and still be OK with all the music at your own wedding.

Play what you want but be mindful of your guests. I was recently at a wedding where I thought the music was great but in talking to the Grooms Mother I got a very different opinion.

Just be happy you dont have a family that wants to hear 'The Chicken Dance' DaaDaa DADA DADA DAAA DaaDaa DADA DADA DAAA DA DA DA DA

UGGHH..We just got back from the Carribbean and I think the ONLY 4 songs played EVERYWHERE I went was 'HOT HOT HOT', 'Macarena', 'Chicken Dance' and the 'Electric Slide'. I can't listen to these songs ever again or I may get sick. We will definitely not be playing them at our wedding.

I think it depends on your guests. I know each of our guests very well (mostly close family) and have been at other weddings with the same group. They will dance to anything!!! We just attended a close friend's wedding with the same group of guests and they had the same 'Don't Play' list that we did. The dance floor was never empty so I think we are okay.

Other songs to avoid-obscene songs requested by teenagers - I went to a wedding in the summer and they actually played that song by Eminem. I was surprised but thank goodness the older people don't try to listen to the words. Also, my fiance's nephew (14) told me he will ask for the song, I don't know the name, but it's about mammals and the Discovery Channel...not how I envision my day at all. Sorry kids but those are on the 'Don't play' list. I will tell the DJ to avoid anything the kids ask for that isn't bubblegum stuff and even then, just a few. We want Motown, Oldies, a sprinkle of 70's, 80's stuff, even less 90's. Motown will ALWAYS get the dance floor packed. I love country music but even so I won't fill the song list with it because I realize it isn't the easiest to dance to. Of course my fiance's family will want Irish music so some of that, a few polkas for my Mom. I try not to be too controlling but I definitely want to give the DJ guidelines. The suggestion from newly married brides is usually to err on the side of more specifics to the DJ than letting him/her do their own thing. But still to allow for some creativity. A good DJ will be able to put it all together.

Lots of Music Help (Long)

Michelle B,

You should try WeddingChannel.com. They have a specific area devoted to music. From the home page, choose Bride&Groom, then you'll see a section called today's ideas, with 'first dance songs, vows & more.' Take that to ideas for first dance, father/daughter & more, reception music and ceremony music ... plus vows, toasts and readings. On the song lists there, you can click on many of the songs to get to links to hear clips of those songs. After you click on the song, it should open a new window, then just scroll down til you see your song on a list with a musical note next to it, then click there.

We're choosing to go with a wide range of music, from 50's on up to current.
