my cat

my cat

Has to go to the vet this morning. He has asthma. He was coughing so loud last night it woke me up from a dead sleep. I know he will be fine..I've done this before, he just gets a shot and continues his meds but still....I hate taking him to the vet, stressing him out w/ a car ride...ugh. This sucks!
Also I am going to Fla Feb 12th and I have to find someone to give him his meds while I'm away. Now since he is having an attack, he will be on the meds more often (prolly every day instead of every other day) The only person who I know that can give the cat a pill is my brother. He HATES my brother. The nicest cat EVER and he just does not like him. He hisses and bites and attacks him when ever he comes over.
I 've tried to trick him into taking the pill w/ food but he is not having that. As soon as he realizes that something yucky is in the food he won't eat it. I have to find a pet sitter or something. I know that someone had a cat who was ill...did you have a sitter? I need just someone who will give my kitty his meds. I have people to feed and water and pet them. I hate when my kitty is sick..it makes me feel sick!

Re: my cat

Sorry about your kitty! I hope he feels better soon. It's tough about the medications. Animals always hate pills. Instead of just hiding it in his food, have you tried hiding it in a yummy treat like tuna or something? My FH's brother's cat had diabetes and my FH watched the apartment a couple of times and had to give the cat insulin shots.

I hope you find a good pet sitter and that the trip to the vet doesn't freak kitty out too much.

Re: my cat

your kitty probably hates your brother cause he's the one who gives him the meds! lol!
Cats are hard to trick. Maybe you can crumble it up and mix it with a treat or something. maybe a little tuna fish? I know that a cat who doesnt want to take his meds WONT. lol.

Re: my cat

We are having the same problems with our kitty. She was very sick and needs to get IV fluids every day. We can not ask anyone in the family to give her injections every day as it is hard enough for us. So we were going to board her at the vet. But they told us at the vet that she would just sit in the cage for the 3 weeks we were gone, they don't take them out and give them any TLC. So, we weren't going for that. So one of the girls that works at the vet pulled us aside and said that she would come to the house and give the cat her meds every day and she would take care of feeding both cats and all much cheaper too. So, my suggestion, when you go to the vet today, see if there are any young people there that may be looking to pick up some extra money and see if they will come over and take care of giving your cat its meds. Don't ask in front of the vet or anything, pull them aside, because the vet may get mad to know that they are doing this and that they are not making the money you would pay to board it. Ya don't want to get them in trouble. But honestly, I am so happy this girl offered to do this because she is a sweet girl, that loves animals and just got accepted to vet school. So I know she is a loving person and out cats will be in good hands!! Good Luck!! I hope your kitty is feeling better soon!!

Re: my cat

I have tried it all..crushing the pill and hiding it in a treat...he is too smart for that. I give him his pill....just pop his mouth open and chuck it in there. bang bang thats it. He has no problem with it at all and does not get mad at me or anything! He just will not let my brother get near him, and my brother is the only one I know who knows how to do it. I will talk to the vet and see what she says about it, meanwhile call some pet sitters that were reccomended.

Re: my cat

Just got back from the vet. They gave him a cortizone shot. The shot is long lasting so it should last for 3 weeks. SO I will not need a pet sitter! YAY I can just have my brothers wife come over toawrds the end of my vacation and check his breathing. She can give him a pill if its only one time. What I was worried about was having to give him a pill very other day. Thats a little more complicated. If she has to she can give 1 pill 3 days before we get back and then I can give it to him from there, when we return.
Bad newstoo though. My moms cat may have to be put down today or tommorow. She is very old and not doing good. My mom said that she was howling last nite and is howling when she moves around now. Geez this cat must be 17 yrs old now. This is so hard..I mean I'm happy that my cat is OK, but very sad that my moms cat is so old and may be time to let her go.

Bumped to add:
Moms cat is fine...turns out she has authritis in the back and that is why she was acting all funny. She was in pain from that. The vet gave her pain meds so everything will be OK. The pain meds go right on her food so it'll be real easy for anyone who comes over to feed them to just drop it on the food. I'm so happy it all worked out!

Wow - I just read through your entire thread and I was SO upset when I first started reading.. but now I see at the end that everything seems like its working out! I'm so happy!!!!

I love my kitty, she's like my little child ... so I know how upset you must have been..Really, if it happens again that you need someone to help give her medication, I'd be happy to help (if I could)!

Glad it all worked out for you and your mom's kitty, too!

Re: my cat

Awww.thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. The cat is like my own child. Me and FH call him our babby. Its so cute to see him say 'come to daddy!'

Re: my cat

Just curious, is kitty acting totally normal after the cortizone shot? FH's dog is on some type of cortizone medication for her allergies and it makes her a little nutty.

Re: my cat

Well it's not supposed to 'kick in'till 2/3 days after he gets it. He did sleep last night under my moms bed (which he never does, always sleeps w/ me) But my nieces slept over so that could be why he was hiding too.
I dunno though, my kitty is pretty nutty anyways...I don't know if I could tell if there was a dfifference!

Re: my cat

Ha ha! I know what you mean. I would definitely describe my own cat as 'pyscho' (but in a good way)!
