My co. just layed off someone who is handicapped!!

I am SO mad and upset right now. I have a co-worker who has multiple scerosis and they just layed him off- not because of his illness but because of a reason they feel is valid, which I KNOW is not. I feel horrible- he has 2 little kids and in this economy where is he doing to get a job, let alone medical insurance. I am even more mad becaues someone who deserves to be let go is in good with our boss so she will never be fired!! I am so upset for him right now!!

I think they were really mad that he sent something out (a press release) without getting it signed off on. Yes- an issue but nothing that NOONE else here has done before!!

I feel bad for that man. I hope they gave him a good severance package and he is able to find another job.

Try and keep in touch with him if you are friendly with him. Maybe having at least one friend in the company may make him feel good

if they feel they have a valid reason, then to NOT lay him off would have been discriminatory. I understand you may have more sympathy for him because of his disability & medical expenses, but that doesn't mean he's more entitled to a job than others.

I don't think it's discriminatory- i just think that what he did does not warrent that and him having this disability plus 2 small kids makes it worse on top of that!!

I don't think they offer severence- my company is in bad shape!! But yes Chippa- I will def keep in touch with him!

since they're hurting so badly, they may be looking for ANY reason to lay people off, and he gave them one. Maybe there were other things going on you don't know about.

I feel bad for anyone who loses their job right now (me included, though I am enjoying not working).

Does his wife work? He can get insurance through her or through COBRA.

I agree with Lisa - it would be reverse discrimination to not lay him off simply for that reason. Assuming he qualifies he can continue benefits through COBRA for 18 mos, but it's still sad to hear anyone lose their jobs in this ecomony.

i understand your sadness. I just got laid off cause I was not happy there. That is what they told me! it is a tough market and I wish him luck in his search for a job!
