my credit card was stolen. what to do next?

My credit card was stolen from my pocketbook at work yesterday. I just cancelled it and I was told I wouldn't be responsible for the purchases. They went to Macy's and got gas ($674). They are sending me a fraud report to fill out and they said it would be helpful to fill out a police report. Anything else I need to do? Do I put a fraud alert on my credit report (even though they don't have my SSN)? Thanks

I'm so sorry you must feel so violated. I don't think you need to do anything except for cancel the card. Just watch all your accounts and make sure nothing seems fishy!

Definately go to the police to file a complaint report!!!!!!!! It is Grand Larceny and if the people are ever found, they can be arrested!!!! And filling out a report can help with the credit card company, so you are NOT responsible for the charges!!!!

That's horrible - Why do people do such things?

My friend AND my sister have had their wallets stolen in the past. The best thing you can do is to cancel the card, fill out the recommended forms, and most importantly - keep track of your credit record. I think people are allowed to check their credit report for free once every year... I don't think my sister or my friend had to put a fraud alert on their credit reports... Hopefully someone else will be able to chime in on that.

Make sure you notify Social Security and the credit reporting agencies. They will flag your SS# for possible fraud and identity theft. Sorry this happened...some people just s@ck.

Thanks everyone! I totally feel violated! I was at work! And I work in a very new office so we're not fully staffed, so there was only me and 1 other person there yesterday. Someone must have come in without us realizing it and I stupidly don't lock up my bag I will now! And I will def. file a police report. I can't stand people. For every good person there seems to be a bunch of bad ones
