My dad wants to change his father/daughter dance song...

My dad wants to change his father/daughter dance song...

From Frank Sinatra's 'The Way You Look Tonight', which is short but sweet, upbeat, catchy, nice....

To The Pretender's 'I'll Stand By You', which is slow, long, and really really depressing

BAH. Granted I'm not exactly Little Miss Sunshine, but that's a tad much, even for me! The sentiment is nice I guess, but it's a little dark.

******

Oh, why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don't be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
'cause I've seen the dark side too
When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

So if you're mad, get mad
Don't hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now
Hey, what you got to hide?
I get angry too
Well I'm a lot like you
When you're standing at the crossroads
And don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
'cause even if you're wrong

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you

And when...
When the night falls on you, baby
You're feeling all alone
You won't be on your own

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you

I'll stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

*****

So what should I do now? I'm really inclined to just ignore him, plus I already had my DJ meeting, even though it would be easy enough to call to make the switch, but I REALLY don't want to dance to this. Ugh! I don't want to hurt his feelings either, but I definitely inherited the quality of not realizing when something is inappropriate from him, and I think he just doesn't think this is weird at all

Tell him you feel like thats more of a hubby/wife song... Me & my dad had no clue what to dance to... if something he suggested didnt seem 'appropriate' i would tell him... we actually didnt pick out our song until right before the meeting with the dj... we used the sinatra one you originally have... it was perfect for us (i think at least) bc my dad likes to swing around alot... not much a slow dancer... so the beat fit great and he got to twirl me around countless times lol

I don't think it's 'inappropriate' IMHO, BUT I think it's a great way to get out of using it. Just tell him you think it's hubby/wife and let it be done!

The Way You Look Tonight is so beautiful too. Plus isn't it the Father of the Bride Song. Tell him that song really makes you think of him. The other does not.

Or is there another song you can both agree on?

My dad chose Daddy's Little Girl when I was 5, I had no choice. But its such a pretty song.... 'your sugar, your spice, your everything nice and your Daddy's Little Girl.'

Ha, my dad suggested that song for me for irony purposes only...we both got a good laugh out of it. My mom most of all.

I think I'm just going to tell him no-go on The Pretenders, and he still has one daughter left if he's really set on that song.

what about 'i loved her first' by heartland...
its the song i used for my father/daughter dance and it was very fitting..
tell you dad you dont think it goes...
give him some more options and maybe he will like another one better

He likes it, but he's trying to be very very literal lyrically...and he likes the lyrics to The Pretenders. I think he's trying to be profound...I don't get it though, because he's a musician, and he's not going by musicality on this one.

Eh I just left him a voicemail saying I'd rather not change the song. We'll see what he says.

I say do what makes your dad happy...this is his one dance with you so if that makes him happy and it has meaning to him use it...you can ask your dj to cut the song short to solve the issue of it being long and you can even invite people onto the dance floor to alleviate the seriousness of it.

Tell him you think its not really a great song for a wedding & read hom the lyrics! I think Frank is also a better choice. I fnot go with the classic. I did daddy's little girl. Since i am lol

I'd just tell your dad that you really want the other one but if it's super important to him then just do the other - are you having a band or DJ? bc if it's a band they can always pick it up a bit. . I think your doing Dj though right?

I didn't even ask my Dad about the song OR even tell him what it was. . I picked one nice slowish song and then had them move into this fast funny song that was a joke btwn us when I was small. . but that was just my 'gift' to him!

I used that song and OMG did eveyrone including us cry. It was so sad. I don't know if she wants that, lol.

I still vote for My Girl for you guys if looking for something cute and nice.

He was 'fine' with keeping Sinatra...my mom hates the other song too so she was like uh, no LOL. That song really meant nothing personal to him anyways, he just happened to hear it on the radio and decided on a whim to change it, so not a big deal. He agreed probably better for us to have something more upbeat anyways.
