Don't know what to do with it! We absolutely can't decide if we should save all of it or if we should take 2k out to go away for an all inclusive vacation on his week off in Oct. (which has to be booked today to get the carribean sale Liberty Travel is offering)
Part of me thinks if we save it, we will just spend it on random things knowing that we have a little extra $$ (like I already treated myself to a facial before I even knew how much the check was going to be) So I know if we spend almost half of it on a trip at least there would be something to show for it.
BUT
We are going to sell our co-op in Jan and go house hunting so I feel guilty booking a trip knowing we have this huge expense ahead of us -and we could try and fix it up the co-op before we sell...
what do you guys think?

Hmmm we were in the same boat with DH's bonus. We put aside $1500 for vacation and are going to Florida in November for our anniversary, and put the rest into our house saving fund (his bonus was $5000). Florida was cheaper than all-inclusives we were considering, so it was a compromise. We got very cheap airfare.
Definitely put some aside to have some fun!

We're using it to buy the furniture for our house...perfect timing! Enjoy - they deserve it! We also splurged a bit and bought a big barbeque...

I say book a trip! A fantastic trip!! Once you are a homeowner, vacations might be harder to come by!

I am a bit of a miser so I would say save it for your house.

DH got his too!!!
We are using it to pay of one of our credit cards totally and the rest to another so we can have less debt so we can better figure out how much of a mortgage we can afford.

Same here, FH got his. It went off to the bank, into savings for our future home. We are planning a wedding but Its technically unforseen money so we are acting as if it didnt come in, especially since we are actually ok in the whole wedding savings
Its great the NYPD got something in return but it sure aint enough for what they do. Oh well, better than nothing right?

I would use some of it for a vacation( you deserve a vacation)
Speaking from a real estate point of view, I would put the rest of it in the bank because the mortgage company wants to see that you have liquid monies available.
Whatever you decide, have fun!

We booked! We went back to Punta Cana (this will be our 3rd time!) and we're staying at Sunscape The Beach.
I am so excited! I was worried at first but now that we booked it I am happy!!!!!!!

I would take the $2K and go on vacation. Saving $4k sounds more than reasonable.

I would definately go on a vacation and save the rest! I thought NYPD was supposed to get like $12,000 retro.? I guess that's after uncle Sam! I can't wait till teachers get a raise!! Hopefully I will be getting a nice retro check too! Have fun!
