over the last year dh and i have been slowly bringing our dog ( lives on top floor) and our cat (in basement ) together. we've been doing much better recently BUT when the dog is downstairs he is either trying to sniff the cats butt or he's in the litter box EATING or smelling around!
what the #$%$^!?
we yell at him every time but he doesn't care. what do we do? and why in the world is my adorable cocker spaniel eating kitty litter?!?!?
its common. long story short: cat food tastes better to dogs. cats dont digest everything, therefore dogs think of their poo as a tasty snack.
we call them 'litter critters' in my home.
Tinkerbell is the absolute WORST with eating litter critters, but all three do it.
i got a litterbox with a cover, but my dogs are all smaller than the cat, so it doesnt keep them out.

thank you so much for letting me know that my dog isn't a sick puppy! heehee. u just saved me a visit to the vet! i guess we have to put the door back on the box ... oy!

we have this problem too.
We put our litter box on top of another box- so it's raised up.
The cats have to jump up a little to get in there- but they've been doing it.
It's high enough that my turd burglers can't get in.

I was told to try hot sauce so that the dog doesn't like the taste, but then my dog ate it anyway! The only thing I could do is put the litter on a microwave cart that I don't use as a microwave.
I see your dog is much, much bigger than mine, so you could probably get one of those covered litter trays. they even have ones with dorrs now! unfortunately, my dog is smaller than my cat, so it wouldn't work for me.
