On Saturday fh and I had one day pre-cana at the Brooklyn Diocesan Society in (you guessed it ) Brooklyn.
Going in I had some trepidation about how it was going to unfold...I was thinking it would be A LOT of dogma and hard core Catholicism.
what we got instead was Sandy and Richie, a couple from Queens that have been married for 35 years. they were warm, funny, and had a tremendous amount of faith, but it was an accessible faith. they told us stories from their marriage..the good, the bad, and the ugly and gave GREAT advice on how to keep things going, even when the going gets tough.
we did some great exercises and I think we were happy to know that we are pretty much on the same page, even though we do have totally different personalities. LOL
even the talks about sexuality and family planning were honest and realistic. they spoke very freely about sexual desire for ones spouse (they are BIG advocates of 'making love' woo hoo! they even said we are 'doing God's work' and 'giving Grace' when we do it) and in regard to family planning, they basically said, have one child and take it from there.
we were supposed to be given a talk on 'natural family planning' from a Deacon who was a no-show (and I think they were both relieved about that ) so we really didn't touch on birth control at all, but they really drove it home and sex with your spouse is a beautiful thing that should be celebrated.
all in all I had a great experience. I know it various from place to place, but I just wanted to share my experience with you guys.
Good luck to anyone still waiting to go.

Our host couple emphasized the same thing! With that encouragement, we went home and gave some grace!

That's really great to hear.
The program that we were supposed to do in Jersey got canceled so we are going to make it up in one day at the people's house. I'm hopeful it will be painless!

Re: My experience at pre-cana on Saturday
We finished ours last night.
It wasn't nearly as bad as we thought it was going to be. The couples that did it were nice and had humor in their teachings. Both FI and myself agreed that it was a good thing to do. It did and will continue to help us. We may even start going to church more. Well, on the holidayz anyway.

it was 'all day' but it started at 9:30 and we were out by 4, with a few breaks and a half hour lunch in between.
it really didn't feel that long at all. and fyi, starting in Jan '06, pre-cana's will be AT LEAST 2 days (start Fri night and go through Sat.) no more one day jobs!

Re: My experience at pre-cana on Saturday
we have our last pre-cana next saturday...
it was pretty cool, they brought foccus into the group thing this weekend....well kinda.....instead of meeting with a married couple to do foccus, they had us break up and discuss our foccus with eachother, and they went around making sure that we stayed 'foccussed' (sorry I had to!)
I really liked it that way, especially because my mom is really involved in the church and i know all the couples that do pre-cana, so it was nice not to have to discuss this stuff with them!!

Re: My experience at pre-cana on Saturday
We have pre-cana this Saturday! I was a little nervous, but if it is anything like yours was, we wont have a problem!
We already went tto a couples house and did the foccus questionnaire, which was interesting, but definitely helped us open our eyes to a few things. I am so glad we only have to do the one day one, but after pre-cana, we all go to 5pm mass and they present us to the parish!!! Should be interesting...
