My First Catholic Confession

My First Catholic Confession

I'm sooo scared - I'm making confirmation in May... I've never been to confession (even though they said we did when we received communion... I honestly never did!)

I have to go to confession for the first time Wednesday and I don't know what I'm doing!!!! I'm also pretty sure I've done a lot of horrible things in my lifetime.. I'm going to sound like a terrible person since I've never been there.

Do I have to be super specific w/details of things... or can I just say... I've lied, I've cheated... etc (especially since there are so many since I've never done this!)

FH is supportive - obviously - he thinks I should sit face to face with the priest but I think I'll start crying... and I hate people seeing me cry.. plus I've made really bad decisions in my past and there are a few things I'm afraid to confess... FH knows everything tho thank goodness!

You can get as specific or as vague as you would like. If there is something that has really been bothering you, then I would mention it to the priest. It will help ease your mind IMO... I havent been to confession in many years but when I did go, I would name like 3 things I felt bad about and leave it at that.

HTH

ETA: If you are afraid to confess things that may be against the church's teachings, I personally would opt not to tell them... Im sure they have heard it all by now, but I wouldnt feel comfortable... You may feel
differently

Re: My First Catholic Confession

Thank you for your help! I guess it's really between me and God and He is aware of everything I've done. I'll try to be vague... maybe just confess to the commandments that I've had broken and take it from there.

I just wasn't sure if the priest would probe... like a therapist lol.

I definitely want to tell them the big things - kinda don't want to go to my parish to do it though haha. FH thinks I'm nuts. I just want to be absolved when I receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Matrimony.

I'll just be vague... thank you!

Our parish does it with 3 other ones... I was really scared too I had nightmares that I'd missed the classes.

Adults aren't actually confirmed till Pentecost at the end of May... so if you start after Easter I'm sure you'll still have plenty of time.

We started in early March 5 classes.

We were going to do that for Pre Cana too but FH booked his band to play that weekend even after asking me like 100000000 times what the date was LOL

We are definitely looking forward to being more active in the church and want to do things like married couple retreats!!
FH even wants to host pre cana one day... lol that would be verrrrry entertaining.

one more question about confession lol

did you have the option to be behind a screen or did you have to sit face to face???

I think at the mission on Wed we have the option - I think I want to be behind a screen at least for this one.

Re: My First Catholic Confession

I know how you feel about confession...I hate it everytime ago...a lot of people do!

I usually go to the one at my church, right before the holidays....where you get to go up and tell the priest like one thing you did wrong....I go to this one so it's short and sweet!

I have a hard time at church since my grandma passed.....I always tear up because she was very religious...so at confession time I usually walk away with tears so people must think I'm that BAD!

Anywho...lots of luck; it will be over before you know it....they will bless you, tell you to say some prayers and you will be on your merry way!

I'm sorry about your Grandmother
I had a woman who always took care of me - sort of a cross between a babysitter and a nanny - anyway she taught me all about God all the time... and one day in church when we did the sign of peace there was a woman who looked just like her and I started to cry.
FMIL and FH were really concerned lol I couldn't help it for like 20 minutes.
