we were told we had to block rooms a minimum of 6 months before the wedding

that is not early for BLOCKING, which generally means they set aside rooms for your party and release about 1 month prior to the wedding.
Most hotels wont charge you or have a penalty for those that don't book.
BOOKING, on the other hand, is different.
Edit: I think we blocked our rooms this summer, ~ 1 year prior to the wedding, and almost half are booked already. We just sent out our OOT guide and some friends of ours are planning to book soon, so I will call the hotel back in a few weeks to get a new count.

with Marriott.. if you block more than 15 rooms, you are reliable for 85% of the rooms.. meaning if you book 20, 18 must be booked.. if you do 15 and below, you are not responsible..
some places also have a minimum that you must book to be eligible for their free shuttle..

That wasn't true for the Courtyard . . . perhaps just the main Marriott hotel?
