I finally sent my invites out on Saturday, I brought them to the post office to get hand cancelled and they said that they don't do that at that particular office so they were sending them to the main office. Hopefully they don't get lost. I do have a question, if we receive gifts from those who cannot attend, should I send out a thank you right away or wait until I get my photo thank you's in August from my photographer. I feel like that may be too long to wait to send a thank you.

I think traditionally speaking you have two weeks after a gift is sent to send a thank you. But I'm not 100%

You should send a thank you out right away....and if you wish, when the pics come in, you can send those out as well.. but I do think the proper thing to do is send them out right away..

OMG, already?! Yikes, I was planning on the end of the month. Now you've got me worried...
Also, hand cancelled? What does that mean? Am I supposed to do something special? We were just going to bring them to the PO and put them in the mailbox...

Your scaring me.....I'm getting married the week before you and I'm not even done packing mine up yet. Good for you for being ahead of the game. What did you put as your response date?
I think that it's OK to send your Thank You with all the others. But if you see the person, you should say Thank you. If the person is very close to you you could even call them to say Thanks and then send the Thank you later.

I sent out my invites early (12 weeks) since my wedding date is on July 4th. We have a lot of out of towners and my RSVP date is extra early (May 25th) as my lease ends May 31st, so I'm hoping to get as many rsvp's as possible to avoid confusion with the address change. Plus, I just wanted to get rid of the boxes of invites!!!

You know when you get mail and the stamp is crossed over, that is 'cancelling'. Many people have their invites hand cancelled so they don't get torn or anything by the machine they normally use. Of course, I found this out 5 minutes AFTER I mailed my invites, so I didn't hand cancel them. To my knowledge, none of them were destroyed, but some of them did get smudged.

That sounds like a good idea, but I can't imagine the post office is going to be too receptive to me dropping off 200 invites for them to hand cancel... how did people get them to do this??

Alison, I think it's pretty common for the post office to get this request for wedding invitations. When I went on Saturday, the guy at the Post Office said that they don't do it, but he'll send them to the one that does...

I would send the invites right away. You can always send them a pic with a note later if you're close to them and you think they'd like it.
I see you're getting married on 7/4 at the Watermill! What time? My best friend (babeyblu16) is also and I'm a BM! Her cocktail hour starts at 7!

I sent my Thank you's out already. I received 8 no's and checks & Items from our Fortunoff registry. Thank you' went right out.

I dropped off 175 invites and they hand cancelled all of them with no problem at all. I am also getting married on the 4th and sent them out last week because I did not do save the dates and it is a holiday. My response date is May 31st.
i think if I received the gift 3+ weeks befor ehte wedding...I sent a TY right away...others I waited
ar eyou excited!!! DH is out in SD...and I'm leaving 5/4...I'm coming out on friday though :)

Yabbobay - Wow, your DH is already in San Diego??? But you'll be out here before you know it. It actually rained today (which never happens). Everyone was freaking out. I love that. Anyway, FI and I are moving into a house in a couple of weeks so we are really excited about that. We should definitely get together once you get out here. You will love it!

I am with Alison. This hand cancelling thing is a mystery to me. What machine do they run the invites through? Do you still put a stamp on it yourself?
BTW, check out the time on this post. I might spend my entire HM sleeping, becuase my insomnia is out of control!
