my little guy is sick

my little guy is sick

So my kitty Tiger has been throwing up since tuesday morning. We took him to the vet and the vet gave him some predigested food to give him (we couldn't feed him his regular food or water until wed night). Well Tiger hasn't touched the predigested food (and i don't blame him ). So last night we gave him a tiny bit of regular food and he threw it up. So we left out some more of the predigested food and he's still throwing up. My FH took him to the vet this morning and they're going to keep him overnight.

Has anyone's cat done this? I mean i know they throw up occassionally for whatever reason, but we don't know why Tiger is throwing up. If he had a virus or whatever, wouldn't it have passed by now (its been 2 days)? What could be wrong with him???

My puppy has been sick all day. He has vomited about 6 times today. Im going to wait till tomorrow and then bring him to the vet. He wont eat his food , which is actually concerning me a bit.

Do you have any plants in the house that he could have gotten into too.... cats love to eat plants and sometimes they do not agree with them and some plants are just poisonous in general to them (link to aspca). Last year I found out my Tigger was eating the Pointsetta (sp??) plant and she went through a few days of constant throwing up, not eating and no bowel movements. She went to the vet almost every other day because of it, they dehydrate real quick and I wanted to make sure she was ok. They ended up giving her something to stimulate her appetite and it did work for awhile, but then it just cleared out of her system and she was normal again.

It might be a possibility... but definitely check to see if you have any of the plants on that list just to be on the safe side.

Hope he feels better soon.

Yeah we don't have any plants except 2 spider plants. I can understand the pointsetta's because those are poisonous. I spoke w/the vet and he doesn't know why he was throwing up. They kept him overnight and they said that he's been eating and not throwing up, so thats good. But i don't get it... why don't they know why he was throwing up to begin with????? (didn't the vet go to school for this stuff?)

He also mentioned that Tiger has been backed up inside w/his bowel movements so they gave him a laxative yesterday. But the bad news is that he still hasn't gone. The vet wants to keep him until this afternoon to see if he goes, but if not they'll give him Berilium??? or something like that. But on this issue... the vet still did not know why this was happening.

How does the vet not know whats wrong?? Isn't that his job??? I mean okay great, he's not throwing up anymore and he may poop later today... but that doesn't solve anything. Are they just going to give him back to us and say I DON'T KNOW what happened?

Re: my little guy is sick

I've been through this with our last dog. ANY time your pet has been vomiting repeatedly, please please go to the vet, an emergency one if you have to. They get dehydrated very quickly, and dehydration and vomiting can elevate their heart rates to a dangerous level.

Last month our dog ate a sock, something he had NEVER done, he never ate things he shouldn't. He got sick, we took him to the vet, he had fluids, a special diet, and even x-rays. The sock didn't show up in the x-rays until days later. Unfortunately for our dog, even after surgery it was too late. So learn from us, continued vomiting = vet visit.

I'm sure it isn't serious though, but be proactive, we had to switch vets to get it figured out.

Re: my little guy is sick

Thank God I brought Sarge to the vet when I did. The poor thing was so ill, I never imagined. He is in the hospital right now and will be till Tuesday the latest. He swallowed some coins and had zinc poisoning. He had surgery today to remove the coins, and the vet said he is very stable and resting.

Re: my little guy is sick

Well we got a call around 2pm saying we can pick tiger up at 4pm. But the vet had no reasons why this was happening and my cat still hadn't gone #2. So why would they send a cat home and not know what was wrong with him? Well i was ready to take him today and bring him somewhere else when the vet called at 3pm and said the cat threw up again. So they were keeping him overnight AGAIN and giving him a different laxative. I told my FH that if they don't have anything solved or have some answers by tomorrow morning, i'm taking him out and taking him to the 24 hour emergency place. This is ridiculous!!! As a vet, you're supposed to find out answers and severe constipation and throwing up is not something you just ignore!!!

Re: my little guy is sick

I agree!!! Get a new vet. I dont know where you live, but the place that Sarge is in now, is WONDERFUL!!! They knew within a half hour what was wrong with him

Good Luck

Re: my little guy is sick

Okay so i went to the vet at 4pm to see Tiger. They did another x-ray and used Berlium (which is NOT a laxative, but it is basically a dye that highlights the intestinal system). Well usually within 30 minutes it goes through the intestines completely. And the problem with Tiger is that its not, which means that there may be blockage. So they're doing another xray in the morning and if its still there... they have to operate.

Has this happened to anyone before? how long is the recooperating time? How much did it cost (obviously i don't care about the $, just curious)?

First of all - sorry your little one is sick. I have two cats and it breaks my heart when animals are sick.

Could he have swallowed something?? Maybe his feces is just so impacted that he can't hold anything down. Definitley demand answers and don't take him home until you are comfortable and confident he is ok.

We had similar things happen with our male cat. Last year around Christmas he swallowed ribbon. Not to be gross but I saw it sticking out his butt. I can laugh now but then it wasn't funny. He had x-rays and wound up passing it on his own. And this year he was constipated bad and needed x-rays. He got a laxative for that and he is ok.

God luck and keep us posted.

Re: my little guy is sick

Okay so here's the scoop. Yesterday we went to the vet to see tiger and i wanted to speak with the vet myself. So we hung out with Tiger for about 30 minutes and then we talked to the doctor. He showed us the x-rays and all. According to the x-ray the berilium?? barrium?? didn't pass through his system yet, but it highlighted this one particular area in his intestines. They wanted to keep him over night and take another x-ray in the morning. So my FH and i took him home instead. The vet said that we couldn't feed him and we had to keep him contained so that he doesn't eat anything else. Since he would have been left all alone in the vets all night by himself... my fh and i didn't like that too much, so we brought him home for the night. We put him in our bedroom and cleared everything we could possibly see away from him. We even tore the bed apart and took everything out from underneath it and we vaccuumed.

Anyways, i brought him back this morning and they took another x-ray. It showed that the berilium is still in his system, which is odd because it usually goes in and out within 30 minutes i think. But there is also an area that looks like there is some blockage. Short story... they're operating today.

They said they'll call and let us know, but we can probably pick him up tomorrow, which is good because i hated the idea of leaving him there for 2-3 days more.

*Oh and they gave us an estimate of around $600-800 dollars. So its less than i thought, so thats good.

I just want him back.

Re: my little guy is sick

Oh and the only thing we can think of that he swallowed was... our tree skirt. We have this cotton like tree skirt and i've seen him nibble on it once or twice. But i can't be around 24 hours a day so it's mostly that. Plus with the x-rays, he doesn't show a definite object. In my mind, i think the cotton skirt stuff formed a ball or a net which blocked his feces. But i'll find out later today.

Re: my little guy is sick

so nice to hear about your cat. i was reading this and it started to sound like what my cat was going thru. he used to throw up more so than normal cats. then when he got older it got worse ans the symptoms of throwing up just got worse. his diagnosis was IBS.

in february 2005 we had him hosptalised and he stayed a few nites in the hospital. he was really bad and i blamed on myself b/c i was not there with him. the hospitaliation went good and he got better but there was still a high white blood cell count. i came home in december 2005 and he wasnt doing good. we thought he was going thru another bout and brought him in but b/c we spent 1000 dollars in february we knew what was happening. my sister is a vet tech and she knew what to do so we bought the fluids that we needed and figured we would have her do all t hat the vet could do with half the cost. all we had to do was pay for supplies.

he was just too sick, and couldnt make it. he dies 2 days later.

i know that we did what we could. he was 14 and had a good life.

and yes vets should know what they are doing, but often times pets come in and have the strangest syptoms. who knows what the ate or chewed on? and what the symptoms are as of that result.

we think he had cancer b/c of the high white blood cell count.

get your cat checked out for IBS.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. That's so sad, but like you said... he lived a good life thanks to you.

Thank you for sharing your story and i will definitely keep that in mind. Tiger has been home safe and sound for 11 days now and is doing well. He got his stitches removed yesterday. He loves to eat everything and anything so we'll just have to watch him as much as we can or eliminate small pieces of things. Hopefully we won't have any repeats of this!

This happened to my ferret! He ate the rubber buttons off the remote control and it become lodged in his intestine. They had to operate and all he could eat for a while was applesauce.

Sarge is doing great!!! He is completely recovered. Still eating light, but the stitches are out and he is back to normal... Thanks for asking.
