My mom

My mom

My mom is kind of old school - she is 59 and likes to keep things 'traditional' which for her is how her wedding was back in the 70's.

She doesn't 'get' a lot of the stuff that us ladies are doing nowadays for our weddings - does anyone else have this problem/issue w/ their moms?

I am trying to pick my battles and just realize her frame of reference is different - I'm her only child, so I know she wants the best for me - but you know what they say, you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

Re: My mom

My mom isn't on my case too much about most things, but little things that I would like to do she has voiced an opinion about.

I want to wear colored shoes for the wedding, she wants me to wear white.

I want to just have a ceremony, she wants me to have a full mass.

I wanted to get married on the beach or at my reception hall, she said it has to be in a church,

But, all in all, she understands that this is my wedding, we are the ones paying for it, and she's going to have to deal with our decisions on what we want to do. The church/full mass I'll give her, but not my shoes! lol

my mom is pretty laid back about things, but she keeps bringing up the prices of things and comparing them to her 1979 wedding.....like i understand its shocking to see how much things go for now-a-days, but there's no way Im gonna get away with spending $200 on flowers (i wish i could tho!!!)

Re: My mom

My mother isn't like this, but my future MIL is. And I must tell you, it much worse coming from your in laws than your own mother! I told her that I didn't want to get married in a church and she BUGGED out on me. I had to sit down with her and make her understand that I'm not that religious and it's not important to me to no get married in a church, (plus it doesnt help that the church my FH and I would have gotten married at is over an hour away).

Just sit down with your mom and explain your situation to her and how things are different from the 70's. I know it's easier said than done, but try it!!!

I hope it helps! Good luck!!!!

LMAO!! that's hilarious! my FMIL had her wedding in her parents' house!!! They need to realize that weddings aren't that simple anymore, even if the bride tells people, 'I want to have a simple wedding' THERE'S NO SUCH THING!!!!!

Re: My mom

Yes!! My mom still thinks everything costs $1 and is so clueless when it comes to budget. She hates the idea of me having baby blue nailpolish for the wedding (i wanted something light and to be my something blue) she thinks its should be like a traditional french manicure type pink. She also thinks you can not have a bridal shower and an engagement party. she says its one or the other. lots of other weird things too. Everything is different now and a lot of even the old school etiquette is out the window now. It's hard having a wedding with everyones differences in opinions and whats wrong and right. too many battles.

You have to choose what you want to tell your mom. I went and booked vendors and then told her how much they cost. My paretns were shocked at the donation for the church but I have to keep mentioning to them that in 1981 $4000 is pretty much equal to what I am spending on my wedding. Just remember its YOUR wedding noone elses and you have final say.
