So we extended an olive branch to my mom's estranged 1/2 brother who lives in Chicago and sent him and his adult children and their kids invitations to the wedding.
I get his response card in the mail that states he will not attend. In the response card there is a check for $150. Now my paranoid mind is thinking, 'Oh he thinks I'm inviting him for $$$!' Also in the memo part of the check, it says 'wedding' not Congratulations or Best Wishes, etc... He is such a weirdo. Am I being paranoid?

So far he is the first to send a check. OK I feel a little less paranoid. It's just the fact that they haven't talked in many years.

It is kind of weird- the checks I got from people that couldn't attend always had a note with them

Re: My Mom's Estranged Brother
I would not read into this... even if you sense it might be a little 'cold' or impersonal. I think sometimes when you open a door to invite people back into your life... it can be slow and people are usually a little more reserved. I think you should keep it positive and send a thank you. Maybe if you include a personal message in your thank you card it could keep the door opening wider

In this case... I would give a benefit of the doubt. I don't think you should assume it was in spite.

Re: My Mom's Estranged Brother
did he send a little note anywhere else? I wouldnt worry about it at all, at least he responded back and cares enough about you to do that!

Re: My Mom's Estranged Brother
Don't be paranoid... maybe it's his way of returning the kind favor you gave him of extending the olive branch. If he thought you were just inviting him for money, wouldn't he be spiteful and not send anything or send way less? I would just write a really nice thank you note saying how much you appreciate it especially considering the fact that the families haven't been in touch etc etc.

Re: My Mom's Estranged Brother
I personally never would have thought to write 'best wishes' on the check, I would've written 'Jen's Wedding' or whatever.

I wouldn't read too much into it... Men aren't as analytical as women... I am sure he sent it to be nice...
