My new dress is 'in' (But it's not the dress I wanted at all!) long (NOW WITH PICS)

Original post by GinaBambina08

I don't know if you girls remember this, but I posted a couple of months ago that i'd be getting a new dress...well it turns out that's not the case at all, i'll have to stick with my old dress Here's the story:

When I first started dress shopping, I went with my aunt and my mother..from the very beginning, I had my heart set on an eve of milady but I couldn't bring myself to spend $5000 on a dress that i'd be wearing for one day...I don't have a problem with others doing it, but I knew that I personally couldn't handle that expense because I just graduated from college and I'm not exactly swimming in money...so, I went with a mary's dress that is beautiful, but not exactly my style...

Several months later, my aunt tells me that she secretly ordered the eve of milady dress for me and that she is going to have it shipped to me...well girls, I just got it, and it is NOT the eve of milady that I loved!! I'm guessing it's a failed attempt at a replica.....To be perfectly honest, the dress looks like crap! It's made of a linen-like fabric and it's uneven, and the train is just wrong....EVERYTHING IS WRONG! It also has an odd smell...There is a label on the inside and it's not even in english, it's something in chinese...the dress arrived folded up in a little pouch and the pouch was wrapped up in duct tape

So i'm guessing she must have had it made instead of ordering the real deal? I just don't know what to do, I CAN'T wear this to my wedding! But I don't know how much she spent on this and I don't want to hurt her feelings...what should I do?? I have two dresses that I don't like! I'm guessing i'll just have to have my old dress altered and tweaked until it's more 'me'...I don't know..

you can tell even by the pictures...i hope your aunt didnt spend a lot of money on that

I have an eve dress and I know how much they go for so if she spent that much on a knock of that really would be terrible

Yeah I know...i'm really hoping she didn't...

I agree you will have to talk to your aunt, her heart was certainly in the right place and she will see you're not wearing the dress and I'm sure she'd want to know so she can try to get her money back!

Now have you gone and tried on your 1st dress again yet? When you have it on maybe you'll love it again... a lot of brides seem to go through having doubts about their 1st choice and end up loving it again when they put it back on... otherwise like you said, if you still dont kove it I'm sure your seamstress with help make it into something you love!!

wow! i cant believe that happened! that is horrible! the new dress looks nothing like the picture

i really do love your first dress a lot! the train isn't really my style, but it's detachable, right? you dont need to worry about bustling it...

you could also make it strapless and it would look beautiful.

hopefully you can figure tihngs out with your aunt too

Yeah, i'm definitely going to make it strapless...I think that'll make a big difference...the train is detachable, I don't know what i'm going to do with that yet.. The biggest problem I had with the original dress was the way it fit, it wasn't very flattering at all...but i'm hoping alterations will take care of that

OMG
im soo sorry..
here is what I think. your aunt found that beauitful dress and bought it because it was a cheap 'good' price
but I bet is not the original eve of milady dress its just a copy.

talk to your aunt. tell her you think it might be a fake..

Sorry to hear that...there are warnings about buying dresses from internet sites because this specifically happens. It's too bad that a good gesture turned sour...good luck altering your current dress!

Here is what I would do if I were in your shoes :

Firstly - I would feel somewhat relived that this is not happening in August....we still have some time to work with!

Second - I would really try and focus. Ok I was just dealt a major blow here... lets take some breaths and get very clear and put my emotions aside.. so now I can...

Third - Talk to your aunt. I would tell her the dress that was shipped is damaged through shipping and can not be worn. It is also not a real dress, and is made with unusual synthetic fabrics that are not the best suited for that day. I would be comapssionate with her and really be sorry that she spent money on something that didnt work out - especailly since her heart was def in the RIGHT PLACE I would also ask her where she got it from, because you are upset that she would try so hard to make a dream come true for you, and she was wronged ***again - do so after emtions had settled**

Fourth - then I would take a few days and see what I want to do... I would do some research.. If you really WANT that other gown - thats fine, but its time to get proactive. I would do some research - is there a gown that looks just like it....is there a place that might see a sample for cheaper...ebay (althought could be risky). But really figure out what you want in a dress and where to go from here!

Sort your feelings and emotions with this one and try to stay cool. Nothing we can do about it now, cant change what happened, but I would remember that no matter what to FH I am going to be the most beautiful bride!

and I would be greatful for a great aunt ... shes a good egg!

HTH sweetie!!!

I agree that you need to talk to your aunt. If you feel very uncomfortable about it - can your mom talk to her for you? Is it your mom's sister?

It will all work out!
