Im not 100% sure but I think laminate is a plastic made to look like wood.
Like Pergo is laminate...and i think that is mostly plastic.

Whatever it IS, it DAMN Durable !
My sister has had it for voer 3years now. Looks as new as the day she put it in, and BOY has it seen spills, kicks, tracking in mudd, etc, from the kids (and rude company )
Its AWESOME !!!!!!!

I think there are different grades of laminate too. Like Pergo is incredibly durable and looks almost exactly like wood - so i would guess that is a good one. On the other hand, Ikea makes some their furniture out of MDF and covers it with a thin laminate that doesnt really look like wood and is very easy to damage.

I was looking at cabinets, and some say solid wood, some say veneer, and some say laminate. I assumed that laminate was like formica, but my friend said it's not, although she hasn't a clue what it is either!
As for flooring... I'm having my wood floors laid TODAY! (Oops... that had nothing to do with this post!! But I can't help it, I'm just too excited!!)

It sure is durable. I dont think it is all wood. I LOVE the look of hardwood though.

I think laminate is actually the process of applying a thin veneer of something to something else. So laminate cabinets could be many things wood on wood, formica on wood etc.
I could also be way off base here.
