He was at Lowes with my mom and he stuck his finger down near the shopping cart wheel just as she started to push it and his finger got crushed and his fingernail completely ripped off except for a teeny tiny piece!!
I really don't know what to do. Im going to take him to urgent care tomorrow. They said it may take 6 weeks to grow back..
Has anyone ever lost a fingernail? Will it be very sensitive for 6 weeks? Its also on his right hand. Im not sure he will be comfortable writing.

aww that hurts! I had a toenail fall off when I was a kid. A table fell on it. I remember it taking a while to grow back, I don't remember if it was painful or not.

in elementary school, this kid sat and slowly [over time] pulled his fingernail off. after a few days, i don't htink it bothered him anymore. i don't recall how long it took for a new nail to grow in.

i lost my ring finger nail about 8 yrs ago - it hurt like he** in the beginning but then it got better. my brother and i were wrestling and he pulled on my acrylic and away it went - anyhow it took me about 8 months for it to grow back to normal w/out any weird ridges. but since hes young and his nail bed isn't that big yet, i'd say 2 mos should be ok. it'll stop hurting after a few days

Good, What Im worried about is..
When it happened his nail ripped off 99% of the way. It actually flapped off to the side. My mom in a panick put the nail back where it should be and they wrapped it up with a bandaid. Im worried that under the nail might need cleaning...
I know it will fall off but Im afraid for now it may be wet and dirty underneath.
Im going to bring him to the doctor tomorrow when they open.

they'll take it off for him, if i remember correctly they took mine off - my finger stayed mostly uncovered especially as time went on - funny though, i was getting acrylics then and i'd have them do all 9 and leave that finger alone...they never gave me a discount - i was mad...lol

they might remove it all and then clean it up. he may have to soak it in something...maybe burrows solution. thats what i had to do when i had a toenail remove, yuck. my toe was really only sensitive the first few days, and then it was fine. took 2-3 months for it to grow back.

Poor baby!!
I lost my thumbnail a couple of years ago. It will be sensitive for a few weeks. Poor baby. The doctors really can't do much, except maybe give you a cream to make it less sensitive. The last piece that is still on will fall off before a new nail grows on.
