Last week he started having seizures and I guess we didn't know what it was until Saturday we decided to take him to the vet. They are 90% sure it's epilepsy. If not they said it could be something with the blood flow into hi stomach, I don't know, and that could be corrected with surgery. If it is epilepsy he will need meds for the rest of his life to control seizures. It's so sad.... he's really not himself right now, and there's not much I can do to help.
Does anyone else has had this happen? How is your pet handling it?

Re: My puppy has epilepsy
Hi. Why not try going on petfinders.com and going on to the animal forum there. Good luck.
Just a tip. IF you have a purebreed, don't tell the other members that you have one. They believe in animal rescue only. But, I guarantee you will get a lot responses.

Re: My puppy has epilepsy
my old dog used to have seizures. what kind of dog do you have? our dog was part german shepard and they told us it's common in german's. he used to take phenobarbitol (sp?) the same meds that human's take. he took it on a daily basis and it used to help him greatly, although he still used to get them once a month.
you have to be careful though, after the have a seizure they are in a different mode, we let him out one time for fresh air and he actually ran away, good thing someone i knew from school (back then) found him and we got him back.
he lived a long 14 years though, so the disease didn't kill him it was just old age. they are very hard to see in the beginning and you really hurt for them, i could never imagine seeing a human go through the same thing.

Re: My puppy has epilepsy
Thanks girls. He is a cockapoo (part cockerspaniel part poodle). He's been on phenobarbitol for a little over a week now. He is still a sleepy, not as hungry and thristy as in the beginning. However he has these fits, that scare me a little. He starts growling and trying to bite me, he wasn't like that before. Hopefully that will pass.

Re: My puppy has epilepsy
they usually only last a couple of minutes, and lose all control of bladder, we used to just hold him down while he went through it. if he's biting you he doesnt' mean it, he's just a different dog then. i would let him just go through it if he's hurting you until it's over.

Re: My puppy has epilepsy
My GS had seizures almost like clockwork. Our vet said there was nothing they could do unless we brought him in while he was having one (how the hell was I supposed to get a 90 lb GS in a car while having a seizure?!?!?!?!? I should have gone to another vet....)
He continued to have them regularly, losing bladder control, biting his tongue and foaming at the mouth, and coming out very quickly. We lost him to a very bad seizure that he couldn't recover from, it was devastating, and I was a total mess. I still miss him sooooo much. He was my best friend.
I don't mean to scare you, just keep a record of the seizures, you may start to notice a pattern (my mom swears they happened with the changing of the moon). This may help you control them better. Talk to the vet and see that they do the right thing, unlike what they did for Shakespeare.....

ETA: If he's mean while not having a seizure, I have had friends with cocker's.....they can be very nasty.......

hmm then what they say about german shepards is true then, that it's common for them to have them.

I had a husky when I was growing up (my parents got him before I was even born). He had epilepsy and had 'fits' about once a week for his whole life. When he had a fit, we would pet him to calm him down. They usually lasted about 2 minutes. He lived a wonderful life in spite of his condition. He lived to be 19 . Good luck, FM me if you need any info.
