My SHower Venue Just Pissed Me OFF

I am a bit peeved with my Shower Venue ( wont name names). I visited the location, loved the venue and signed the contract. The owner gave me a great per person flat rate deal that basically I couldn’t pass up. I left a $200 deposit and it clearly states on my contract ((and the owner reiterated ) that my balance is due 2 weeks prior to the event ( July 19th)

Why do I check my messages and it’s the owner asking me to call him. My heart drops because my invites are printed and paid for there is no turning back I am hoping nothing is wrong. I call him and he goes when do you think you’ll be able to drop some money off......Um excuse me, WHAT? I reiterate that the final balance as per my contract and our discussion is due 2 weeks before the event. He goes, yes but most people make drop offs periodically.

I tell him I will be there Saturday with a $200 deposit towards the final balance because 1) I don’t have time for this 2) I have no other options at this point. My BP and mom are paying for the shower but I left the deposit. Now I am about to shell out another $200 bucks because I cannot ask my BP to randomly give me the money now. They are all in the process of buying their dresses and were under the impression that the money wasn't due until July.

This dude pissed me off. I don’t want to jeopardize the relationship with him and he was generous and offered me a great deal BUT a contract is a contract. I'm no attorney, but I was pre-law in undergrad and Contract Law was a class I actually paid attention in.

I am going to make it clear that I will make a deposit on Saturday but he WILL NOT get the remaining balance until the date agreed upon. The contract does NOT call for payment installments so he isnt getting any.

The economy ***** I get it but dont try to renig on an agreed upon deal.

thats really obnoxious!!! i totally understand that you are going to give him $200 since you don't want any bad blood...

the same exact thing happened with my Invisalign. I signed a contract stating that the balance is due the day the treatments are done, yet everytime i'm in there he hounds me for money and gives me attitude when i don't have any money to give him.

it's just very unprofessional. if they want money periodically then just change your policy. don't give us attitude when we want to stick to the contract!!!

Wow that is sooo unprofessional. I can't believe that he'd be hurting for money that bad to hound his contracted patrons for installments when it CLEARLY states something else.

I dint understand why you are going to give him money.....In this economy I would not give him money. If he is calling people for money then he probably needs money to pay his bills. God forbid something does happen to his business you do not want to be out anymore than the deposit that is required by contract. DO NOT GIVE HIM MONEY!

Im sorry if this panics you...its not meant to do that but just be really careful with paying people ahead of time these days.

Before you give him more money, consider this....

Is he asking for the money b/c he's having a problem making ends meet? If this is the case, do you think they'll still be open for business in 3 months? If you aren't sure the answer is 'Yes, they will be open in 3 months' then rethink giving him more money.

Be careful, if he really needs the money that badly, maybe they are going under. If they do, you are last online to get your money back.

I'm not paying any vendors till the very last second in this economy.

That was exactly what my first thought was. Something doesn't sound kosher in Denmark. It's really tough out there for restaurants right now. My sister is set to lose her job next month because they are closing the restaurant, partly due to personal reasons, but mainly because business has been awful. Not that your installment is going to keep them afloat...but it sounds like desperation is sinking in perhaps.

I wouldnt even drop off another 200 if the contract states that it is due 2 weeks before then thats when he gets it. who cares what everyone else does. The contract is a legal agreement and theres nothing he can do about it.

Ugh, a nightmare. People suck. And you're absolutely right. A contract is a contract, and I don't care what 'most people do.' He's clearly hurting for cash, and I don't believe him for a second, that's B.S. You may want to find another location, as he's clearly in a bad situation, which could result in 'cost cutting' for the event.

Here's the good news, if it helps:

I showed up for my shower on Sunday, at a great restaurant in town run by an amazing lady. It was set to start at 1 p.m. At 12:30, the owner and chef was not there . . . . turns out she had us down for the 19th (which is Greek Orthodox Easter, which would mean my FH's family AND THE OWNER AND CHEF could NOT be there).

She came, she got it together, and it came off without a hitch, despite my near heart attack since my Mother (who threw the shower) came from FL; my MOH and her entire family came from NY; my BM flew directly from a business trip in CAMBODIA; my friend flew in from CT; and my other BM left work at a major cable news network to come to the Shower.

Moral of the Story: it will all work out in the end, but if you're not comfortable with this guy, find a venue you are comfortable with and confident in.

I work for a wine importer and let me tell you how many resturants dont pay the bills.Which really irks me bc when one goes out to eat, dont you pay right away???

I would def not tip this guy at all!! What happend to customer service!! I mean I know you got a great deal but it isnt free!!

You shouldn't give him any more $$ like the other girls have said. If he insists then tell him you would like your deposit and look elsewhere. Who wants to deal with someone who is so pushy and basically sneaky. He had one thing on your contract now wants to do things another way..not cool.

I wouldn't give him more money. Honestly if he is hurting for money enough that he would break your contract I wouldn't give it to him. Besides the principle of the matter, I would be afraid. It could be a sign that they may be on the brink of closure and if they did you can say goodbye to that money.
