My sister is going getting surgery todayUPDATE

...gastric bypass. She was supposed to go in at 7:30 am, but they always make you sit there and wait. She was soooo excited about it!

I think she will be fine as long as she follows the diet to a 'T'. Hey, if she losed a lot- I may do it (but I'm chicken)

Anyone have it or know anyone who has had it done?

She didn't get the lap-band or full bypass. she got 'sleaving' which is like the bypass without the re-route. After she loses a bulk of the weight, they may go back and do the other half of the bypass.

UPDATE: she is out of surgery and in recovery and the doc said it went very well. Her hubby is there with her now. She may come home tomorrow . it will be a while before she is up to par. She got the laproscopic so the healing time is a little less than the open surgery. Thanks for all of your well wishes girls. All you LIW girls are awesome!!!

I know 2 women who have had it. Both loved it, one had it several years ago and has kept most of the weight off. The other just had it in April, my ring bearers fathers mother, and she has lost 40lbs, the last I heard about a month or so ago, and is doing great!

i know people who've done the exact same thing, and not only were they fine, they lost a ton of weight...
the key really is sticking to the diet though. I also know 3 people who had the surgery and lost well over 100lbs only to gain more than that back over the long run.

the surgery should go quite fine. I'll keep your family in my thoughts today.

good luck to her!! FH's father had it 3 years ago and it CHANGED HIS LIFE!!

I know someone who had it done as well, and everything went great and shes happy she did it... your sister will be fine and in my prayers today

You're totall right, she will be fine as long as she follows the diet.

One of my BM's had it done a few years ago she was thrilled...BUT, she doesn't eat right and has gained back a great deal of the weight. I don't think she'll ever be as big as she was back when but still....she was joking with me that I had to wait to get married until she took off some of the weight.

Unfortunately there's no miracle cure.

If you have an questions let me know. My mom got it done as well as others I know. She must follow the diet. It is hard at first, but worth it!! Good luck!

a co-worker of mine got the band when it was brand new...he is suffering alot now....he is always out..not sure about details. he shakes alot and pinches his nipples

My mom's friend got the gastric by-pass , she looks and feels great. Had minor problems but it changed her life.

aww- that's sad about the guy, but..pinches his nipples...haha. I have never heard of that side effect.

The shaking can have something to do with the effects you get when you eat sweats- you can shake and get sweats (when they do the bypass w/ re-route) It has to do with the absorptions of nutrients or sonmething.

My sister got like half of the bypass, basically. So she won't have the shakes if she eats a cookie.

YES! this is exactly what happens. His nickname is 'PINCHY'- and hes cool with it! I would feel bad if he was half way decent he is a rude miserable person! before the operation and after!
