name change?

Bring marriage certificate (it will come to you in the mail) and change it at the social security office. You can find the closest one by searching on the internet. Don't go on a Monday - always crowded. You can download the forms on the social security website too. I did that and filled them out first so it didn't take that long.

Then you can go to DMV. If you go on the DMV website and search for name change it will tell you what you need to do. If your car title is in your old name you need to change that too so bring that with you. Again you can print out online and fill them out before you go to make it quicker. I was also told (but other brides said no one told them and nothing happened) that you should call your insurance company FIRST and tell them about the name change. I didn't even have to show proof. I told them DMV told me that I had to get proof of my insurance card in my new name. So they faxed me a new card in my new name and mailed the real new card in the mail. DMV is OK with the fax copy. (Of course when I went back after finding this all out the girl didn't even ask for it...grrrrr) but better safe than sorry. You have to also change your name on the registration if it's registered to you (that's where the insurance name change comes in).

I also changed my name on the phone bill, Con Ed, and went ot the bank w/ the marriage certificate to change my name on my accounts.
