Re: Name change..
You definitely have to go down to the Social Security office to get this done. It helps if you download the forms at www.socialsecurity.gov before you go. I went to the Patchogue one today, and I think with waiting for my number to be called, it took all of 30 minutes to get done. It takes about two weeks to get the card in the mail, but you can ask them to give you a letter for work reflecting the name change.
The DMV, however, is a totally different story. Make sure you bring your license, registration, AND title for your car (if you own one) in order to make all of the name changes. It took me a little bit longer because I can't find the title to my car ANYWHERE, so I had to apply for a replacement title on top of everything else. You'll get the new registration with your new last name right away, but you have to wait for the new license and title to be mailed to you. Something I learned today: don't go on a Friday at 2:30 pm, because you'll wait at least an hour to get it all done.
I'm changing my name on my bank account with DH tomorrow (oh boy, more fun!!) and at work on Monday. . .and I know there are so many more things I have to change. You might need to bring DH with you to the bank, and I have to bring him to work on Monday because we're consolidating our health benefits.
The fun begins!!!!!!!!

Re: Name change..
I sent the form & my marriage cert. in the mail to the freeport soc ser office, it was easier for me since they have no late hours and i couldn't take a day off since i just took a two week honeymoon. I sent it in around last week in june, i just got a receipt in the mail telling me i should have the new card in 2 weeks. So it might take longer but it was easier.

You need the title to sell your car, so I would probably get on either finding the title or getting a duplicate.
