Ladies - did you file the papers to change your name with the appellate division?? If so, how long did it take?
If not, did you change your name for other than professional purposes (DMV, SS etc).
If you changed your name for everything other than professional purposes, how did you renew your secure pass?
TIA!!!

Re: Name Change ? for already married LAWYERS
I received my marriage license three days prior to getting admitted so I called to see if it was too late and it wasn't. All I had to do was send them a letter and a copy of the license and I was admitted under my new name. Very easy. Sorry I can't be of more help about what to do if your name changes after getting admitted, but it shouldn't be much harder. I know quite a few lawyers who have done both - kept their name professionally and changed it for everything so it's definitely do-able to do either. Good luck!

I've work in many law firms through the years and Noticed many Lawyers who get Married keep their own name professionally ... But If you wanted to change it .. Hummm I would assume you should contact the American Bar Association .. They would Direct you to the right procedure

Re: Name Change ? for already married LAWYERS
To clarify my question - I know exactly how to draft the papers and file them with the appellate division to change my name after I get married.
I want to know how long it takes to get the paperwork processed.
Second thing, for any lawyer that didn't change her name with the bar, but did change her name for everything else, how did you renew your secure pass?

So you don't have to change your name with the bar, right? I want to keep my maiden name professionally, I am just wondering if when you renew that you have to update with the bar.

Re: Name Change ? for already married LAWYERS
I changed my name everywhere and it took about 4 weeks from the time I sent out my name change forms to the appellate division to get the confirmation letter back from them saying that they'd received my request and updated their records. *However* the letter also said that it could take up to 2 months for my name to be officially updated in the Roll of Attorneys, so that I should anticipate that there might be some confusion if I applied for admission in other courts during that transition time. Hope this helps

I just renewed my secure pass and as long as you give them the old one and your old driver's license you are fine.- Be where though it takes 4 weeks to come in
I think I am keeping my maiden name for work and changing it for all other matters though. Its a personal thing. I like it to match my law school diploma.

I have not even started the process but have 3 friends who did. From what I was told when I asked them - 4 - 6 weeks. Neither has a secure pass (all in house so no court appearances).

Re: Name Change ? for already married LAWYERS
My impression was that the name that is registered w/ App. Div. must be your legal name. It that true?
I didn't change my name at all.
My secure pass expired a few months ago. I hardly go to state courts. I'll be going out to Riverhead soon for a new one because I do need it sometimes. The security office in Riverhead was very helpful when I first got my pass. If you are out there, stop in to see them.

Re: Name Change ? for already married LAWYERS
It took my friend 4 Weeks as well.
I am also keeping my maiden name for work and the bar, but for personal life I will be using both names, hyphenated. I am assuming, since I am keeping both I don't have to change it with the bar. I plan to leave my secure pass, bar and name for job as just my maiden name without my husband to be's name. Assuming the great and powerful oz that is the app. div. allows it!
Any of you girls appear in Civil Court, all of the NY boroughs? I wonder I have seen any of you around lol!

I used to be in Civil Queens and New York all the time. Now I am only there on occasion.
How do you plan on keeping your name professionally? I would like to do this, but how does it work if you have to use your legal name for your secure pass? What about your notary, etc.?
I have been married for 3 months now and still have not changed anything

Re: Name Change ? for already married LAWYERS
i think that if you change your name legally and with the app div with a keep a hypenated version, you can sign with either name, but I am not sure. I def. want to keep my maiden name for work. I couldn't imagine haveing to sign my whole name, plus his. Way too long. I am going to start maiking calls when we are back from the HM. Why can't the guys just have this problem?
