If I become Michele Jeanne Smith-Doe, can I still legally use Michele Jeanne Smith without the Doe? I know that I can NOT change my name on the marriage license and then it doesn't matter what I use socially but what about if I legally change it to the hypenated name. Thanks

Re: Name change legal question
I think once you change your name with social security, that's what your 'legal' name is and you would have to use the 'Doe'. Of course, I'm no expert and legally I'm going by my husband's name, but I still haven't changed it with DMV or my car insurance yet!!!! So, I guess I'm doing exactly what you asked in the first place!!! LOL
As for work, I'm listed under my maiden name in the company directory and email system, but for payroll and medical and all that I'm listed under my married name. But when I sign important papers, I sign with my married name because I'm legally known by that both under my marriage license and social security.
Have I totally confused you yet? Because I just confused myself!

Re: Name change legal question
I understand what you are doing. But I do not want to have to change my name legally on all documents and use Smith-Doe everytime. I think if I hypenate then I HAVE to change documents and sign Smith-Doe.

I'm a bit confused -- you want to use Smith-Doe, but then you don't want to have to sign it that way each time?

Re: Name change legal question
I want to be Smith, with the option of Smith-Doe for after we have children. I know one couple from work who had a baby, the women never changed her name. In the hospital the baby was known as Baby Mother'slast name, and not the Dad's. I know the Dad was a bit upset over that. If I can have the option of using it when I want, that would be nice. I NEVER wanted to change my name but after meeting Scott and falling in love, I am trying to come up with a happy medium. He has NO problem at all with me keeping my own name. Maybe that is why I am looking for a comprimise because he is letting me make my own choices- not giving me a guilt trip about not taking his name.
