I have just spent about 20 minutes reading threads on LIW with differing information every single time, so I appeal to you wise married ladies to help me in my quest.
I get the feeling, regardless of what some threads tell me, that I MUST go in person to SS and DMV. However, I am also reading that if you use Missnowmrs, you can just mail some forms in. Obviously I love that idea because I have zero vacation days when I return from my honeymoon and have no idea when I'll be able to change my name.
Ladies, I implore thee - help me! How can I avoid taking time off of work to get all this stuff done? Is it unavoidable, as I fear?

Re: Name change - Missnowmrs
Hope this helps..i just looked up on DMV and found this:
Change Your Name
You must visit a local DMV office to change your name on all DMV records and documents.
Bring your NYSDMV photo document or other proof of identity that displays your previous name and has a value of at least six points. Bring a US marriage certificate, US divorce documents, or other court papers issued in the US that prove your new name. Or, you can bring proof of identity that displays your new name and has a value of at least six points. To change your name on a registration document and a title certificate, you must bring the registration document and the title certificate that display your previous name. Use form MV-44 to change your name on your driver license, learner permit or non-driver photo ID card. There is a fee of $10 to get a new photo driver license or learner permit document that displays your new name. For transactions processed on and after September 1, 2009, the fee for the document is $12.50. The fee is or $5 to get a new non-driver photo ID card. Your new document arrives by mail in approximately two weeks.
Use form MV-82 to change your name on your registration documents and title certificate. There is no fee to change your name on your registration documents and title certificate. The DMV office gives you new registration documents that display your new name. A title certificate that displays your new name is mailed to you.

Re: Name change - Missnowmrs
The very first thing you have to do is change your name with SS. You can print the forms online and mail them with your original Marriage Certificate and they will mail you back docutmentation that it was changed and your Marriage Certificate. About a week later you will recieve your new SS card.
Once you get that you have to go to the DMV in person with your new SS card and your Original Marriage Certificate. They will make you take a new picture and within about a week you will have your new DL.
Once you recieve the SS card and DL then you can change everything else.
The website missnowmrs will do all of this for you for a fee of $29.95 (I think). If you have questions about using the website give them a call because I am sure they will tell you everything you need to know.
HTH!!

So - you are saying I do not have to go to SS to get my new card, right? For sure??? I can take a couple of hours to go to the DMV but to do both and get to work for me is impossible, so just one would be good!

You wouldn't be able to do both in one day because you need your new SS card in order to change your name with the DMV.
But yes, what I am saying is that you can mail everything to SS and get a card that way.

I would love to just wake up the day after and have an official, legal new last name. Why can't it work that way???

Re: Name change - Missnowmrs
this is what i did:
day after i returned from HM: went to bank of america changed name on accounts, it was difficult bc DH wasnt there and all our accounts were joint, but they gave me a form to have him sign and mail in.
about 1 week after i got back from HM: took original marriage cert to DMV, changed name, new pic
next day: went back to dmv to change reggistration (i forgot to bring papers with me first time)
like 2 weeks ago on a friday around 3:30. went to ss office in west babylon, waited for about 10 minutes and had my name changed within seconds, they needed original cert as well
whenever i had a chance: call cc companies to change name on cc...didn't need to fax or mail anything in at all.
just a day or two ago: call insurance agent and have him change my name on my car insurance..
eta: DMV didnt need my new social security card, not my old one either...they used my old license

I joined that website and it was worthless, honestly. It didn't take all that long to get everything done -- you'll be fine!

If you added his on the marriage certificate, you need to add his on your SS card. Your SS card MUST match your legal name, and whatever your 'new surname' is on the marriage certificate is your new name.
All the other documents are not as important. But remember that your job must have your name as it is on your SS card so your SS benefits get calculated properly and your taxes can be done properly.

Actually, you CAN change your drivers license before changing SS. I did. I have yet to do SS because they were so busy the day I went. All you need at the DMV for your new license is your old DL & your marriage certificate. (plus the stuff for your car registration if you're chaning that too)

You do not need to change it with Social Security first. I did DMV first and they changed it without ever asking for anything from social security. I showed them my little marriage certificate from the officiant with the raised seal on it and they changed it on the spot. I went to social security the next day.
