Name Change Q (especially for OOT brides)

If you physically live in one state (well, most of the year) but are getting married in NY with a NY marriage license and have a NY drivers license how do you change your name? Can you do it online or does it have to be done in person? Do you have to do it before a certain deadline?

I'm totally clueless here.

there is no deadline, do it whenever you can after the wedding...well you dont receive your certificate until a week or more after your wedding anyways. I think there is a form you can print just for name change, check out the DMV site. I still havent gone to the DMV to change it

Unfortunately you don't just change your name in one place and have it reach everywhere. You have to go to the DMV and SS office and change your name there in person. Passport can be done by mail. Everything else can be done by phone and fax, call your cc companies, some will ask for a copy of marriage license, some won't. Call HR at work, health insurance, car insurance...most of those are just phone calls and they may want a faxed/mailed copy of your marriage license. The big 2 in person are your DL and SS.

There is no time limit. I still haven't done it.

I probably wont be able to get to the NY DMV and SS office until thanksgiving... should i wait to change the rest until then too?

I changed all my info about a week or two after the wedding.
I went to social security, dmv, and the bank in person and changed everything so far by phone.
I don't think there is a deadline for any of them.
I rushed to change mine just so I can get all my mail in one place and with the right name.

Doesn't really matter. Unless you can think of a situation where you'd need to show your DL and cc at the same time and have them match...I can't think of any....you'll have some things with one name and some with another. Remember, when you change your DL they'll let you keep the old one also, so worse case scenario you'll have both on you for id purposes.

thats whats so annoying about it, you have alot of places to change your name and can take time. Why cant they just automatically do it for you

Cause we're women and we apparently love to be tortured our entire lives..... Notice it's yet another thing men don't have to go through...

well if thanksgiving is the only time you'll be in ny after the wedding then nothing you can do but wait. But other things you can call over the phone and do it after you get your marriage certificate, which you should have by the time you get back from your HM

i only changed my name on my marriage license because i read that you can't change it after the fact. not in a rush and actually not really planning to do it anywhere else for now - definitely not at work. I just don't see the urgency... there's no deadline and I figure I will let people call us Mr. and Mrs. flying animal and not stop them but why should I have to go through all the hassle? I can't figure out exactly WHY i need to change my name... DH could care less.

here was my situation:

Live in NJ - have for 6 years

Got married in NY and still had my NY drivers' license and everything.

Had to wait for license in the mail as proof for DMV & SS.

Went to Social Security first & changed info.

Went to DMV in NJ and finally got my NJ license & changed my name as well.

In NJ - they print the license out for you that day - there is NO WAITING for it!

I live in NJ.... Married in NYS and got marriage cert. from NYS.

- You can go to ANY soc security office in the country (I went to the one in NYC today- took 1.5 hours!!- card comes in 10 days & you need this to take to the DMV if you're using as one of your points).

DMV go to the state where you have your license (check DMV website for your state to see requirements- go in person or if you can mail)

Passport you can do via mail

All other bank, credit cards, student loan- visit their websites or call to find out more.

I'm changing mine now... OH- and don't forget to change with work for benefits, insurance, etc....

It's alot of work.....
