Here's my question- I intend to change my name when we get married. I have heard that you need your marriage license to come before you got to officially change your name. But then how do you cash the checks people write to you with your new name? If someone writes a check out to Mr. and Mrs. John Dow but you haven't changed your name yet, can you cash it?

you can cash it... all you have to do is sign your maiden name and your new name... even if you havent changed it yet...

Re: Name Change Question: Bank
Usually they'll let you deposit a check with only one of the people signing the check, too.

If it is going into a joint accounting then he can sign the check and the bank will accept it.

Re: Name Change Question: Bank
I work at a bank and our policy (as well as most others) is that you sign in both your maiden and married name....it happens all the time!
