Name change question - SS or DMV first?

Does it make a difference if I go the SS office first or the DMV to change my name? If so, can you please explain why? Thanks

Does not matter.

I did SS first only because it was more important for me work wise and because their office opened earlier.

do you need to show the dmv your SS#? if so, i might change SS# first

I would do SS first, since it's the most 'official' identity change you can make, it's national, rather than local, and affects your taxes, etc. And, some DMV's require some identification, though your marriage license usually suffices, to issue new licenses with new info., so you know you are set if you have your SS card!!

I went to the DMV first so I could get my new picture ID in the works...I went to SS the same day though. My new drivers license came first.

At the DMV you at least get a temporary new ID with your new last name (and new address) if you moved.

You can show them the old one....the only thing you need to verify your name change is your Marriage certificate-otherwise you just need identifying info-I brought my BC, a bill (with old name on it) my CC from the bank (old name on it) Marriage Certificate and my SS card (old one) and it was fine.

You can do either one first, it doesnt matter. SS only asks you for your DL and marriage certificate (some I think ask for your old SS card-i didnt have mine and it was no big deal)

While this is true...I changed my SS card to my new name 3 weeks before I did my taxes this year...I already was technically a Mrs. on everything else for over a year at that point.
