Does anybody know the exact process, what needs to be done, and how long it takes to change one's last name and also apply it to the passport?
Are we supposed to do it after we get married? Before? Should I just wait until I get back to do everything?

You cannot do it before you get married- you have to have proof of marriage. If you are need your passport for your HM and you are going on your HM shortly after the wedding, you should wait until you get back. You have to 1st change your name with Social Security and then DMV. Everything else can be done after that

There are kits on weddingwire, theknot, etc that include everything you need to change your name!

Great advice. Keep your maiden name on everything and change it after your honeymoon! The name you book with has to match what's on your documentation. I watched a show on cruising where a woman booked her honeymoon cruise under her married name and she had to scramble to have someone from home fax their marriage certificate to the cruise line or they would have been denied boarding! If you're cruising/flying I would call and find out their policies and document who you spoke to. The last thing you would want is to be denied traveling for your honeymoon!!!
