Name Changing...can I wait until after the honeymoon?
I don't want to deal with all the paperwork. Can I wait until a few weeks after we are married?

absolutely! you'll have to wait until you get your marriage certificate anyway - that takes about 2 weeks. Ours was waiting for us when we got back from our honeymoon. You can take as much time as you want and do it little by little. I know people who did it right after the honeymoon and others who did it more than 6 months later.
I jumped on it pretty quickly after the honeymoon. But I'm stil finding places I forgot - passport, frequennt flyer miles, utilities, etc. The drivers license and SSN card were quick and painless.

I was going to do it a week after our honeymoon. What takes 2 weeks? I thought you get your marriage license a month before your wedding and I figured anytime after the wedding you could go to DMV & Soc Services.

Nina, like Lisa said, you have to wait until you get your marriage license to do anything anyway. You can change your name at your own pace. I'm married 8 months and I still didn't change my driver's license and car registration (and you also have to change your title if you own a car)!!! Most of my stuff is changed, but I'm known by 2 different names and sometimes I confuse myself!! LOL
SS was easy. Make several copies of your license because you'll have to give a copy to SS, DMV, your bank, your job, your medical, etc. Also, if you have EZ Pass, you have to give them a copy of your license -- why, I don't know because most credit card companies don't even ask for it!!!
Some of the changes were quick and painless, others were a nightmare!

You get your license before you get married, but then you have to give that to the priest/whoever is marrying you and he signs off on it and sends it back to the City/Town and then they officially stamp it and then send it back with the seal on the bottom of it!! You can't do anything until you get the 'official seal' one.

One's the marriage license (which you get before the wedding) that allows you to get married. You give this to the officiant and they mail it in.
The other's the marriage certificate which is mailed to you afterwards stating that you did in fact get married.
Its the marriage certificate you need to change your name.

Thank you. I didn't know that. I guess I don't need that extra day added to my honeymoon for changing my name. I guess I have to wait until I get that back. Thanks for the info. I had no idea!

question-when do i sign my name to the certificate? at church? which name do i sign? my last name or my FH's?

we signed at the church during the rehersal. You sign your current name - since you're not yet married.

So, those that are already married. Did you start using Mrs. XX even though you didn't officially change your name? I mean, when I start giving my name out at new places that don't already know me, can I tell them my name is Mrs. Nina XXX, even if it's officially not? I'm not talking about legal stuff, but what if I make an appointment somewhere. I can't wait to be Mrs. XXX!

Of course! We started using Mr & Mrs. X on our honeymoon when registering at hotels, going to dinner, etc.
Thats who you are - even if the documents don't back you up yet! Enjoy it!

Debbie, don't worry there will be lots of things that you won't think about until it gets close. I'm only a week away, and so many things have just occured to me that I still have to do!
