Nanny anyone?

Nanny anyone?

Is anyone getting a Nanny, have a nanny or know someone who does? Is she a live-in? How much does a non live-in nanny cost?

We're thinking of doing this... maybe an au-pair, not so much a nanny. We're starting construction on our basement to create a living space with a bathroom, so we can still maintain some privacy upstairs where our bedroom is. Not too sure how much it costs, but we're thinking of hiring someone who is Israeli because DH is israeli and I want my little one to know hebrew. From what I understand from other people who have done it, it costs a few hundred a month (I think around $500, but mind you, I live in Philly, so costs are less here), but you also have to pay for the living expenses of one additional person, and typically, you provide him/her with transportation as well, so add insurance and car costs on top of that.

I work as a live-out nanny here in Maine. I get paid $9 during the day and $12 for anytime after 5pm.
I'm not sure what the going rate in NY is but I can't imagine it being that much more.

So many people here in Ireland use Aupairs. One of dh's co-workers recommended this website Aupair World

Here is an article from the Boston Globe that may be good to get an idea of costs, even though it isn't NY...

Just remember that an Aupair is not someone who is 'on call' at all hours..plus they are typically on the young side and may or may not have experience. Plus you now a new member of your family...they are far from friends/family.

My girlfriend mays $200 per week but she also has to feed and provide room and board for her. She is on call 24/7 but sometimes goes home to Queens over the weekends, she is GREAT! I wish I could have her!! But I just have such a hard time with anyone other than me or my husband caring for our kids, I feel guilty even when my Mom has the kids and I'm at home doing stuff, I prefer to have them with me and like all the 'hand-on' with them.
