Re: Nassau School Districts
Based on some research I did while house hunting back in 2000, I know that these towns have good school districts:
Garden City Rockville Centre Port Washington Syosset Jericho
I am sure there is more, I just can't think of them now.
I've heard Westbury is bad. Is it really? What goes into determining whether or not a school district is good or not?
We really liked a house we saw in Westbury, taxes are high so I figured it was probably a good district but have asked around and it seems to have a bad rep.
Thanks for the input. I'm feeling totally overwhelmed b/w work, wedding in 20 days and now house hunting!! Aaaaerrrrghgg

Re: Nassau School Districts
I have heard the same thing - I hear many parents in Westbury send their children to private schools
starhead...my sister works at Clarke...which is technically East Meadow, but they have a lot of Westbury...from what she tells me...it seems like a decent school...
and I thought Old Westbury was a good district?

Not sure about Glen Cove but I know North Shore District in GC is excellent.

Re: Nassau School Districts
Clarke is a good school. I am an East Meadow resident and some kids that live in Westbury go to Clarke. But I think it would depend where the home resides on whether the child can go to a hs in another town. The Barnum Woods district in EM is good too.
Westbury may have 2 or even more districts in the Town of Westbury. I know in Elmont they do that. Although Sewankhaka (sp?) is a good school, people that live in Elmont (boarder of SFP and Elmont) go to SHS. But then Elmont has their own school system that ****s. And Sewanhkaka is in Stewart Manor or Floral Park not sure which.

Re: Nassau School Districts
Excellent schools are in
Herricks school District ... Near Rosyln Height & Manhasset Wantagh ... very highly rated. Seaford Merrick
East meadow schools are good ... specifically, Clarke is a great school ... but that's middle school 6-12.
Middle schools are impt, b/c once your child gets there, you may have to consider a private school as an alternative.
Westbury school district is not great. If you can afford it, you'd send your kids to private school (Catholic or otherwise)
***** Be aware that when you read the report cards for these districts, what they are basing their info on is State Testing for last year's 4th & 8th grade students. In some districts, these results are skewed b/c they 'label' their underachieving students as special ed & therefore remove those scores from the data.
You cannot base your decision completely on these scores for lots of reasons, but you can get a good idea. You also may want to tour the school that's zoned for the house you're looking at buying. Talk to the principal and see for yourself!
Good luck!

Re: Nassau School Districts
How do you know which parts of the town are in which school district? Is there a school district map? I'm confused!!
I need a reasonably priced house w/ a reasonably good school district w/ a reasonably good commute to NYC!! HELP!!! Is there such a place?

Re: Nassau School Districts
good luck! But yes there are such places ... you'll have to do your homework!
The realtor will tell you which school district the house is zoned for. You can call the District office & find out which elementary school will be yours. Then you can research the school itself.
As for reasonably priced ... that depends on the kind of house you buy! Today's prices for homes are so inflated, you'll die to see what your $$$ will buy!

Re: Nassau School Districts
I went to Clarke HS, which is in Westbury. It's part of the East Meadow School district, not the Westbury School District.
Where in Westbury is the house that you like? I grew up there so I can probably tell you about the neighborhood.
FM me if you have questions.

Re: Nassau School Districts
I know - houses are outrageous - we may have to think about suffolk but I work on Wall St., the commute would be tough.
my mom commuted from Greenlawn/Centerport to Wall St...and they have an excellent school district...and it is right over the border from Nassau (but in suffolk...so lower taxes...)

Re: Nassau School Districts
What about Lynbrook - on the south shore? They have a great shcool system and are as close to the city as you can get without being in Queens.... Trains are also good to catch there because the Babylon and Long Beach lines runs through there.
