i woke up to hear speculation this morning that she was brain dead...and it made me soooo mad. Maybe because it is my field/profession but blunt head trauma=a trip to the hospital immediately especially in skiing accidents. What a shame. my thoughts are def with her family

she did go an hour later but you have to understand it wasnt like regular skiing accidents. She was on the bunny slopes, she didnt hit a tree or anything, she fell on the soft snow. Infact she laughed about her fall and joked about being clumsy. There was no blood or any visible injury. She went to her room with the ski instructors who asked her to please see a doctor even though she seems fine, they say its their policy. She finally decided to go bc she started getting a headache.

How many of us bump our heads and dont think anything of it, most of us i dont think wouldve gone to the hospital sadly. I have fallen outside on snow and since i was fine didnt think anything of it

It's veryy sad, but I have heard this happen to someone before. They were in a car accident and were able to walk out of it fine. they were to the paramedics, lied down and passed away! It's all soo mysterious!

its called a subdural hematoma. Its basically a bruise on the brain. You know how you can walk into something and not bruise until the next day well its the same thing here (a slow bleed) From what I understand hers was in the back and rather larger which cause swelling in the brain and damage to her brain stem (which controls 'life functions') This is why she was fine at first. the bleed was not enough to impede her functions. as the blood pooled and got larger she complained of a headache and then went unconcious. If they had taken her to the hospital immediately they may have been able to locate the bleed and stop it. So as I said b4 if you EVER SEE SOMEONE HIT THEIR HEAD and im not talking their face I mean areas where the brain is (back of head, forehead or top of head) send them to a hospital to check for anything! better safe then sorry. Sorry if i seem like a biotch about this but you dont understand how aggrivated the resorts drs got me when i heard they let this poor woman go back to her room instead of insisting she go to the hospital!

an hour later is too long bunny slope or not she could have hit herself just right (as she did) the fact is she was moving, fell and hit her head. I cant tell you how many people I work with on a daily basis who dink themselves just right on the head at work and now are paralyzed on one side and cant speak

i know we all see that now. But like i said above, its sad but how many times have so many of us bumped our heads and didnt go to a doctor. I am sure almost everyone on here ya know. Its horrible to think how much an hour could effect someones life.

I def think it could've made a big difference, but i can see how that could happen and somebody not going to the doctor when it was just a small fall.

I fell on the black diamond mountain and didnt think twice

yeah but did you fall directly on your head.?..in order for her to be bleeding where she was she tumbled over and im sorry that isnt just a little fall...if you go head over heels and hit your head thats a problem...its not like she just fell face first into the snow or onto her side she tumbled...and yes she laughed cuz she thought she looked silly...but the doctors should have known better...

yeah i fell back and the person i was with fell on top of me. It was my first time skiing so i shouldnt even have been on that level but everybody i went with were real good and wanted to ski, so after a bit i got on the lift and just went. Stupid decision, at first i jumped off the lift and did that part well and did ok for a bit but once i caught alot of speed down i went. But ive hit my head worse than that on other occasions.

This happened to a young man too. A little differently, he did some college fraternity initiation thing, somebody punched him in his stomach. He went home that night, and went to bed but never woke up. That punch to the stomach caused internal bleeding.

its crazy bc so many things we ignore, bc doesnt seem bad at the moment. One time my dad had a cold, the way most ppl feel when they have a cold, he got sick on a friday night. Just coughing, sneezing and feeling a little drowsy, but saturday around 6pm he started talking to us but not making sense, we realized something was wrong and within mins he just did a 180, we called the ambulance and he had pneumonia with 109 fever, doctors told us they didnt even think he would make it, they had prepared us by saying he might have brain damage and we wouldnt know how serious until he wakes up. Was in ICU for a bit and couldnt even breathe on his own but by some miracle he was ok. We wouldve never thought to take him to the doctor on friday night when it happened bc it was like a regular cold. Also last year, he wasnt feeling fell and started looking very pale to me, i called the ambulance bc i got scared of the past experience and ended up being a heart attack. But these things happen so fast and so many ppl dont run to the dr

I can't believe it!!!

This is the reason why when something like that happens no matter if you don't see blood or the person says they are fine....always get your self checked by a doctor.

I feel bad for her husband and children, around the city they were known to be a very nice couple. My prayers go out to them.

Re: natasha richardson

That is so sad I feel so bad for her family and her children. What a tragedy.....

I fell a few years ago and had a serious head injury... (I was in college and fell off a bar, and smacked the back and base of my head on it on the way down... ).... Well I did go to the hospital later that night they barley ran any tests. I fell asleep there, no one woke me (as you should do with a concusion).... they sent me home within about 2 hours, told me to take ADVIL.... ok last thing to do is take advil bc it causes blood to stop clotting, and I could have continues to bleed into my head. I was upstate and not at the best hospital by any means obviously. By the next day I had a bump the size of a tennis ball at the base of my head, start of my neck. I know how lucky I am that I wasn't seriously injured, to this day it scares me to think about it.

It's so strange though how these small things can cause such devistating results..... my prayers are with her family
