need a car

ugh. so my car needs $1200 worth of work, but its so not worth it bc its a piece of crap with 140+ miles on it . needless to say, i am so broke with the wedding and being a fulltime student while owrking a crap fulltime job...

can anyone recommend an inexpensive new car to buy?

i would have to finance it, but i have $6000 that i had saved ($25 a week so i could pay back my school loan this may) and i can use that for down payment. i just want something that can get me to and from work and school, thats reliable, and with a warranty...i don't even know where to start! my fi and i have only ever had used cars (we are young, 21 and 22) and have no experience with car buying. suggestions are appreciated! ~lacey

I ONLY buy Honda's because of their reliability. I hear Toyota's are good too.

I bought my Certified Pre-Owned Toyota from a dealer. It's a '99 and I bought it in '02 for about $11,000. It's super reliable - I've used it mostly for local commuting, but used to drive it from MD to NY a few times a year and drove it from NY to CA last year. They warranty the certified cars and you get a roadside assistance package for a year or two. I bought it at a dealership on Old Country Rd in Westbury.

I bought my used car from the Atlantic Auto Mall in West Islip on Sunrise, they're really good there. My bro also got his car there, and we're both really happy with them!

Ok, now I've got their theme song stuck in my head, 'mommy take me to the auto mall'. HTH!!

STICK with Honda or Toyota! They are the most reliable and worth the money. They hold their value like no other cars.

I agree-but you can get a certified used one off a lease with a warranty.

I agree, can't go wrong w/ Toyota. Personally I LOVE my Jetta although others on here will disagree.

Re: need a car

thanks for the suggestions. i need something on the cheap side...not a big fan of hyundais, but something along the lines of an elantra, or chevy cobalt, or for a little more i was thinking the honda civic sedan...

i just don't know what to expect as far as monthly payments would be?!?

i need it to be less than $200/month...is that even doable if i payed tops like $15000 with like $5000 down payment? my credit score is 777 (thats OK, right?). ugh this stuff confuses me. we are going car shopping on friday, hopefully i will find a deal. thanks~lacey

Re: need a car

I LOVE german cars especially VW and my friend just recently priced the new Jetta. I believe she said she was quoted for a lease payment of $208 per month with $1500-$1900 down...it's a bit more than what you wish to spend but VW's last forever.
