so my friend just found out her mom has advanced uterine cancer. outlook is not so good. we haven't hung out in forever and tonight we just want to go somewhere chill, have some light food and wine. I was thinking tapas or spanish food or something like that, preferably not italian.
do you guys know anywhere in the midtown to UES area that fits this description? There's cabana on 3rd but they are not quiet and usually very crowded. there's another place on 1st in the 60s but it's a little far from the subway and it's coooold out.
any suggestions would be great - TIA

if you're willing to travel a little try el charro, it's in the village though but such yummy spanish food. And definitely the low key, quiet place you're looking for, and great sangria
everything im thinking about is downtown...there is a brazilian restaurant around the times square area called plataforma

i KNOW, everything is downtown. I'm so lazy - if it were friday i'd go down there but tonight i just want to be somewhat close to the area...
i LOVED el charro - i think you mentioned it before and we went there for fh's cousin's birthday dinner back in feb right before we got engaged [this is where, fh's mom, sitting right across to me, mouthed the words to her sister who was sitting right next to me 'I saw the ring, it's beautiful' and i totally saw it]
that's why i'm having a hard time thinking of a place uptown or midtown

What about divine bar on 51st between 2nd & 3rd? Great place to go with girl friends- amazing wine & tapas! Would highly recommend & to your friend!

OH there is one place, i havent been there but it is cuban food and EVERYONE keeps telling me about it, supposedly its very good and i told FH we have to try it soon
its called victors cafe, its on 52nd street between 8th and broadway

I love Havana Central in Union SQ. Its a cool reasonably priced place with awesome pitchers of mojitos (all flavors)

so funny, i thought it closed but it was mica bar next to it that closed. but this is a good suggestion - i'll run it by her... i know they have tapas but i was thinking more like Azafran or even a place like Son Cubano. Ugh, i should be better at this; i used to live up there.

Oh! And, Saucy on 75th is GREAT! FH & I just went there with another couple... Shared a bottle of wine (new specials each day)/ very chic atmosphere but not noisy at all. Great service & food & very unique (filet, chicken, pasta or fish with several types of sauce to choose from). YUM!

oooh and right by the E for me! i'm going to see if i can find it on citysearch. we're both by grand central so maybe she'd be willing to shuttle over.
if not i guess a wine bar (like divine, that's a good idea) that also serves some food would be good.
