Need a little advice (long)

Need a little advice (long)

So, my e-ring broke...i didn't have the traditional prong setting. so i just have two vertical metal pieces that holds the diamond portion to the band.

Anyhow, my dad is a jeweler in the diamond district and knows a lot of good quality jewelers. I had hinted to my FH to have my ring done by one of them. My sister was even in on it and took him to one of them. But the quote was higher than he wanted because the jeweler didn't have that setting already made. So they were going to custom make the ring, casting it as a 1 piece ring (which entails making a wax mold...then making the ring from that. It's a pretty extensive process).

So FH's friend was recently married and she recommended her family jeweler in chinatown. he gave my FH a much cheaper quote and FH ended up going with him.

Well, I discovered two things with the ring. First of all, it was originally stamped 'PT 900' (90% platinum). But someone had stamped a big '5' over the middle zero, making it look like 'PT 950' (95% platinum). We think that since the original pic FH showed him showed that stamping, they tried to copy it. But i KNOW it was stamped on there afterwards because the '5' was stamped on UPSIDE DOWN.

They also made the ring in separate pieces. So they didn't go through the whole casting process. They just took an existing eternity band, cut the top part out and sodered the prongs and the diamond halo onto it. This is a much easier and cheaper way of doing it (that's why the quote was lower).

So now FH's friend knows about the broken ring and she is going to take us back to her jeweler to fix. And i KNOW all they're going to do is soder it back on....but that won't fix anything...and it may just break again in another 3 months.

What I would really want is for us to go to one of my dad's friends to redo the setting as a 1 piece....but FH doesn't want to offend his friend by taking the ring elsewehre since she spent a lot of time and effort doing this for him (he was out of state, so she was the one driving from jersey into the city for him). She seems to be very willing to talk to/yell at her jeweler for us since she gives him a lot of business. She said this has never happened to anything she's bought from them before.

Should i give the chinatown jeweler one more chance to redo it....I will be there to demand it done as a 1 piece this time. I will also demand a written statement saying that we can return it if it breaks again.

I think you should give him one more chance, especially since it means a lot to FH. Do the written contract thing as well.

HMMM that is a tough one...Well honestly i dont think you need to feel an obligation to get it from the same place again because the friend recommended it to you. He took her advice and they messed up, nothing you can do now and she really shouldn't expect anything at all now. It was very nice of her to help and its not her fault that the ring broke, although, some places you buy things at will give you a cheaper price but you kinda know its not the same thing.

I say go with your gut. If you don't feel comfortable going to the same place then dont do it at all. But if you think that this time they might be able to do it, and also to get things in writing then give them another try.

so sorry to hear that!!

I would give the Chinatown jewler one more chance since it seems like FH's friend is completely willing to stand there and back you up..she probably feels really bad/embarrassed that this happened and will more than likely ensure that the new one is made to your specifications..will it cost you extra to have them make the second one? i hope not!! if it does then i'd take my business elsewhere (and make them give FH a refund)..but if they're willing to do it for free...you can always let them try and see what happens...

good luck

try the chinatown jeweler, and maybe show it to your dad afterward to see if it looks strong enough.

Thanks girls....I think if they're willing to redo it for free and the way I want it, I'd consider letting them do it again.

nope, this is your ring, they screwed it up, go with your dad's friend. We were told (by our jeweler)not to trust any of those jewelry places in chinatown, or even the diamond district. they're big scammers

altough you were reccomended to this place, so not sure
