Need ADULT HALLOWEEN PARTY Recipes

Looking for foods that are good party food, taste good and work with a halloween theme.

This is for adults so no cutesy stuff and it must be appropriate for a party first and formost (most of the halloween recipes seem like something that might look good but would not get eaten)

Doesnt have to be overtly Halloween-ish. It could just be something good for parties.

Any ideas?

Stef, the only thing that jumps to mind is something inside a pumpkin. I know in Martha (not one you have I don't think - I think I saw it in a Nov. issue a while back) she did like a soup inside a pumpkin. That might be nice in those little pumpkins - you know just a taste or something? Or you can serve it in a BIG carved out pumpkin with a ladle….

Sweet potatoes are a good option because they are orange. And they have marshmallows on top so that adds some 'candyish' feeling to it! But these are kind of more FOOD items - are you looking for appetizers?

This is a recipe for boneless Buffalo wings that I got from this site a while back. I have made it a couple of times, and it is delicious and a great 'party' food I think. The recipe says serves 2-4 as an appetizer, but you could make a much bigger batch. The chicken can be fried ahead of time and then before you want to serve them, make the sauce and pour it on the chicken.

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1 egg
1 cup milk
2 chicken breast fillets
4-6 cups vegetable oil
1/4 cup Crystal or Frank's Louisiana hot sauce
1 tablespoon margarine

On the side
bleu cheese dressing (for dipping)
celery sticks

1. Combine flour, salt, peppers and paprika in a medium bowl.
2. In another small bowl, whisk together egg and milk.
3. Slice each chicken breast into 6 pieces. Preheat 4-6 cups of vegetable oil in a deep fryer to 375 degrees.
4. One or two at a time, dip each piece of chicken into the egg mixture, then into the breading blend; then repeat the process so that each piece of chicken is double-coated.
5. When all chicken pieces have been breaded, arrange them on a plate and chill for 15 minutes.
6. When the chicken is done resting, drop each piece into the hot oil and fry for 5-6 minutes or until each piece is browned.
7. As chicken fries, combine the hot sauce and margarine in a small bowl. Microwave sauce for 20-30 seconds or just until the margarine is melted, then stir to combine. You can also use a small saucepan for this step. Just combine the hot sauce and margarine in the saucepan over low heat and stir until margarine is melted and ingredients are blended.
8. When chicken pieces are done frying, remove them to a plate lined with a couple paper towels.
9. Place the chicken pieces into a covered container such as a large jar with a lid. Pour the sauce over the chicken in the container, cover, and then shake gently until each piece of chicken is coated with sauce. Pour the chicken onto a plate and serve the dish with bleu cheese dressing and sliced celery on the side.
Serves 2-4 as an appetizer.

Eerie Effects for your Halloween Party

Halloween parties are all about creating shivers down the spine. When it comes to refreshments, there's no need to worry about making things look beautiful or tasteful. This is the one time of the year when you get to revel in making everything look unsightly and downright unnerving! You can have all kinds of fun creating spooky or nauseating special effects with your food, and even playing gross games with it!
Frightfully Fun Fog
Dry ice is an old favorite for creating a creepy Halloween atmosphere with the billows of foggy mist it gives off. It's available at most places that sell fresh fish. Besides the old 'smoking punchbowl' trick, you can also use dry ice to cover the entire food table in a layer of creeping mist, giving the impression that your guests are plucking their refreshments from the middle of a haunted swamp or graveyard.

The fog given off by dry ice is heavier than air, so it tends to sink down, rather than float up. To get maximum mist, place the dry ice in a low-sided container such as a roasting pan and set it at the back of the refreshment table. When the festivities begin, pour hot water over the dry ice and watch the mist billow and creep eerily across the table. Keep a kettle simmering on the stove and continue to add hot water to the dry ice as needed. Hide the pan behind a cardboard gravestone or a menacing jack o' lantern. For added effect, put a green or purple light bulb in a small desk lamp and shine it on the table. Warning: dry ice should never come in contact with bare skin. Handle it with tongs, heavy gloves or oven mitts only. Keep it away from children and never, ever put it in your mouth. Dry ice gives off carbon dioxide fumes, so use it in a well-ventilated area.

Radioactive Refreshments
Make your food glow! Use non-toxic plastic glow sticks (available at any party supply store) to make your food look radioactive. Place some glow sticks in a clear glass bowl and pile orange, green or red gelatin squares on top. Drop some glow sticks in the punch bowl, too! For more haunted drink ideas, please see our Cooking Basics article, Spooky Sipping.

Cannibal for a Day
Take a small pair of freshly laundered pants and roll up the cuffs a few times. Stuff the pants with wadded-up newspaper and place them in a sitting position on a large platter. Use a large, heavy can inside the waistband of the pants to keep them upright. Now place smoked turkey legs, cheese logs or summer sausages at the ends of the pant legs. Garnish the platter with lettuce leaves for a dainty touch. Now fill a medium-size bowl with dipping sauce or crackers and place it on top of the can. Use tape to secure the waistband around the edge of the bowl. Set the whole platter in the middle of the snack table and wait for the gasps!

Freaky Food that's Good for You!
At Halloween, the focus on food is centered so completely around candy, it's easy to forget that monsters young and old need to get some healthy food down their gullets too. This year, put a ghastly spin on some of your favorite appetizers and dinners, then play some ghoulish games, before unleashing the sugar-crazed trick-or-treater that lurks inside of everyone.

Acrid Appetizers. Turn deviled eggs into deviled eyeballs by topping each one with a slice of green or black olive. Make an edible veggie head: buy a Styrofoam wig head and wash it well. Dry it and secure it to a square of plywood with a long nail. Now cover the head with bite-size vegetables or fruit speared with toothpicks. Use different colors and shapes to make facial features (red pepper or apple slices for lips, radishes peeled in strips to make bloodshot eyeballs). Don't forget the dip!
Mutilated Main Dishes. Cut slices of meatloaf with a bat-shaped cookie cutter, and serve with bat's blood (ketchup). Spaghetti and meatballs takes on a whole new 'life' when you announce it as nightcrawlers and eyeballs. Chicken strips can easily become witch fingers when served with slime sauce (ranch dressing dyed green) for dipping. Stuffed pasta shells have an awful appeal when you call them Snail Shells stuffed with Rat Spleens. Good side dishes include steamed maggots (rice), rotting teeth (corn) and lizard tongues (carrot sticks). For a less nauseating but still festive meal, scrape out small pumpkins and use them as individual serving bowls for black bean, split pea, or pumpkin soup.
