We are having a small wedding of only 50 people due to budget constraints.
My FH's family decided to throw us the engagement party. My mom wanted a big engagement party because she wants my extended family to come and celebrate our announcement and would like to meet his extended family. However, etiquette wise, I know it is common that if people are not invited to the wedding, they should not be invited to the e-party. However, my mom thinks its ok especially if we inform people on the invitations to the e-party that a small intimate wedding is going to be held on with close family and friends. But now FH's mom is presuming and questioning bigger saying that she does not want to invite the people who are not invited to the wedding. Are my mom and I wrong about wanting our extending families to have a chance to meet and celebrate as well? How do we explain this to her?

Re: Need Advice about Engagement Party
i think if you are inviting someone to your engagement party this should be someone you plan to invite to your wedding.

I completely agree with the above posters. If you are extending an invitation to celebrate your engagement, you should extend that same invite to the wedding. Its a courtesy.

Re: Need Advice about Engagement Party
even if we post no gifts necessary?
It's not about the gifts. we really want to be able to celebrate with the family we cant afford to have at the wedding and also for our extended families to meet- otherwise they'll never really have a chance.

Re: Need Advice about Engagement Party
an engagement party is suppose to be a small celebration with immediate family & maybe a handful of friends.
those invited to the engagement party & also invited to the wedding.

Re: Need Advice about Engagement Party
ITA with everyone else
If you want everyone to meet you should a non formal gathering ie BBQ or a dinner at someones home
Once you give it the 'E Party' title it means your inviting them to the wedding.
Maybe you can have a bigger reception a few months after the wedding

Re: Need Advice about Engagement Party
My sister had a destination wedding. So she had a huge engagement party here and small wedding on the beach in Jamaica. No one was offended that she didn't offer to pay for them to go. If they were, they didn't say anything. Doesn't matter. She is married now for 15 years and her wedding was amazing.
