So, my mom was going through her drawers yesterday and found the garter she wore at her own wedding to my dad. She's really happy and excited to have me wear it on my own wedding day. Problem is: 1. I think a garter is a 'sexy' thing and I feel weird taking it from my mom; and 2. my mom and dad were happy for 15 years or so, and then miserable for the next 15. Most of my high school years had them screaming, fighting, and crying, but 'staying together for the kids' so we were all miserable. They finally separated when my sister moved out and are still legally married, but living apart for 5 years now. I just feel like that's bad karma for me to carry with me on my wedding day.
.... or am I being silly? It's just an inanimate object, right? And it means a lot to my mom. Opinions,please!

hmmm thats a tough one...i agree with you about how you feel
i think u should use the whole 'its a sexy thing' and tell your mom that u dont feel comfortable using hers bc u see it as a sexy thing that only fh should see but ask her if she has any old jewelry you can borrow or something

Thank you for the response.
I might do that, but it's a sticky situation. I forgot to mention that my mom is currently fighting cancer, and is all 'doom and gloom', fatalistic, and attaches a huge importance to every little thing, especially surrounding the wedding (understandably!). that's why it's so tough to say no.

hm...that is a tough one, especially since your mom is so sensitive right now. Is there any way you can do something else with the garter? Like use some of the material from it and sew it under your dress as your something old or incorporate it in some other way?

i agree that is more of a 'sexy' thing, and i would feel strange using my mothers as well. I would just explain how you feel and im sure she will understand
