Should FH and I give? We're attending a wedding in Texas this weekend, the bride is FH's college roommate's sister so not too too close (I've never met the bride or groom!) but still semi-close I guess? The wedding is in Texas and FH says its like $20/pp there....its a Jewish wedding so a multiple of 18 is considered the best way to go. Thoughts?

Re: Need advice please...how much...
Hmmm ok well, here's my thing:
Wherever the wedding is, I tend to give the same amount as I would give at another location. I'm not really big into the well they paid less, so I should give them less kinda thing. Nor am I into well they paid $7000 per plate, so I must give them $7000 per person.
So my opinion is to give what you would normally give---however, I don't think many people will agree with that lol

I don't know it's so hard (see my post I just added) I'm having a similar problem. It seems low to us because people here typically cover the price of their plate but it's not like that for people down there.

I don't think that's too low for a TX wedding, I think it's a very generous gift!

You've never met the bride or groom? Why were you invited? That seems weird to me!!! Anyway, I think 180 is a good amount because it's a multiple of 18 and generous despite the cost of the wedding.

She's invited cause FH is invited. Isn't everyone always bitching that it's so insulting not to invite someone's fiance if they're engaged?
I agree with JAAMS, give what you would give anyway. I personally think $180 is fine... or $198... the multiple of 18 thing works in your favor cause you can change the amount by small increments and it won't seem so random as if you gave a $216 gift here, haha

OOhhhhhhh...I totally misread and thought she was invited to her college roommate's sister's wedding...and FH didn't know them either! Makes more sense now

We went to a wedding that was probably like $5 per person (in Illinois).. and still gave $300 for the two of us. I think we paid for the whole wedding!

In the south , inless they have a gala they are going to serve you finger sandwiches, i think 180 is enough. you have to fly all the way down there for people you don't even know and pay for your hotel. that is plenty. i have been to multiple weddings and parties in the south and they usually suck.

My family is all from Texas....you will not be greeted with some gala affair, you will be lucky if you even get an actual meal. Normally they have passed around hors d'ouevres. Also....gifts are usually the norm at weddings in the south, not money.
I think $180 is totally more than generous.....you have to fly there and possible hotel.

That's not low at all! I am originally from Ohio and have always been blown away with the amount people give on gifts. Remember, you have to travel also.

$180 is fine. I feel like our long island NY gifts were less than what we would give to OOTers. We got a lot of $100 gifts at our wedding from locals. you have to pay for airfare and hotel correct? for both of you and only FH knows them??? $180 is great 10Xchai

$180 is plenty. You are spending a lot just going there. We just went to Rochester for a wedding and we gave them $200. It was fine and we were served a full meal. It was buffet style but it was a meal!
