Ok so my cousin is a make-up artist for MAC and has offerred to do my make-up for the wedding which may sound good but really, it scares me. Now this fear is partly because I haven't seen her do make-up since she was in her Madonna stage in the 80's but even without that, we have completely different styles. How do I approach this? Should I ask her for a trial run? If she's good then wonderful but what if I don't like it, then what do I say?

Personally, I wouldn't even ask for the trial run, because if your gut is right and you end up not wanting her to do the job, then she'll know that you don't like her work. I'd probably just thank her for the offer, but tell her you already have a makeup artist. I've seen the MAC people and I don't blame you, I'd be scared also.

MAC employees all are properly trained for brides. MAC is a very creative makeup brand, thus why they may look 'out there' on some of their looks, but they are one of the best brands in the terms of training I've ever seen. I work for MAC and know all the training they must go through.
I would definitely say thanks for the offer and ask if you can do a trial run and see if you can get the look you're going for.
ETA:: Also, if you end up not liking it, definitely say what you would change about it, but this would go for any makeup artist.

I would tell her you were already interested in someone your friend suggested but ask if she would be interested in helping out the BP.

You took the words right out of my mouth, I couldn't agree with you more.

Find a pic that matches your style and show it to her as an example. Chances are she has outgrown the Madonna phase. I know sometime when I pass the MAC store in the mall I get scared, but they are just trying to attract customers. If she works for MAC chances are she is good, but definitely do a trial and casually mention how you are aware that your styles are very different. Maybe make it sound like you want a mini makeover and don't mention that it is a trial fr the wedding, that way you can change your mind.

Re: Need Advice– relative is make up artist
You know... I have the same exact problem. My cousin is a MAC artist as well. When she asked if I needed anyone to do my makeup, I told her that I already have someone booked for like.... the longest time! She is doing my makeup for my brothers wedding, so everyone is happy!

Re: Need Advice– relative is make up artist
I've talked to some different make-up artists (including some often rec'd on this site) and many are or start out as MAC MAs..
my concern would be using a relative as a vendor. Do you think she will be reliable or it could be awkward if there are any problems? Just food for thought!

I would tell a little white lie, and hire your choice for make up and hair. tell her you're friends with the girl who is going to do your hair and make up.
