Usually you give a gift from the registry (if they have registered already) or you give a monetary gift.

you can give money....or something off their registry if they have one...but i think great engagement gifts are for stuff you wont necessarily register for but need...toasting flutes, cake cutters, nice pic frames...etc.

Re: need advice...Going to a engagment party tom
Either money or one of my friends gave me a couple of bridal magazines and a planner. Most people gave around $50

You can give anything from candle sticks to money. I preferred money at my engagement party bc it helped us get a lil cusion together for deposits for vendors. But some people gave candle sticks or kitchen stuff...etc. We had about 60 people and out of that only 2 pple didn't give a gift; which didn't make them look good.

We give monetary gifts when we go to engagement parties...the cutest thing we recieved at our eparty was a 'money salad.' A family friend took a big salad bowl and put a caesar salad kid in the middle. She the crumpled up the money she would have given us and put it around the kit to look like lettuce! she stuck a pair of salad tongs in and wrapped it in cellophane! it was adorable!

If they have a registry... I would give a gift. If they don't and you can afford to do it... I would give them money.

I think money is usually the best gift. I totally appeciated all monetary gifts b/c they helped me pay for all the vendor downpayments.
Depending on who the party is for...I would give between $50 and $100. $100 for close friends and family
