Need Apt Advice

Need Apt Advice

FH and I haven't started looking for an apt together (we said we'd start in July), however a friend is offering an apt, at a dirt cheap monthly rent. The problem? It's available July, and we weren't planning on getting a place until Sept or Oct 1st... needless to say, we didn't budget the extra $$$, for another two month's rent. I have a feeling that FH might push for it, because in the long rung, we do end up saving (there's like a $800/month difference, if we start a brand new lease elsewhere).

Anyway, what do you think?

Honestly, is it more important to have a 'dirt cheap' apartment or one that you like but has no strings attached at a higher price. I know it's a tough decision but it seems to me that you haven't mentioned anything postitive about the apartment other than it's cheap. If that's the most important thing to you then go for it. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Since you don't sound crazy about it, maybe you should wait. If you don't like the apartment or the area or the frienemy factor, you may as well hold out for something you really like. What area are you looking in just in case I come across something?

That's actually the only positive... that's it's cheaper than most apts. FH mentioned it to me, which means that he's considering it - however, even though it's cheaper - we'd still have to pay 2-3 months extra rent (that we don't have).

That's what I think, too, but I just wanted to get another person's perspective... I'm just considering FH's thoughts... I know we're going to differ at the end result.

We're actually looking for an apt in Queens... Forest Hills area to be exact.

If you want to buy a house take the cheap apt w/ strings.

$800 per month difference is $9600 a year, $28800 over 3 years and $48000 over 5 years. Plus the realtor fee you'd pay looking for a new apt.

We're saving for a house and paying for our own wedding so we look at every way to save (basic cable, bring lunch to work, quit smoking just to name a few) on grand scale of 5 years. It really adds up.

If your not happy about it, my advice is to keep looking. I'd rather pay a bit more, and be happy then pay less and put up with 'issues' JMO and Good Luck!

My advice is go with the cheap apt. and save your money.
Hubby and I (mostly me) were 'selfish'..I didnt want to live w/family, I wanted to be on my own, etc. when my uncle offered us an apt. back in '99. Instead of taking it we moved into a gorgeous complex garden apt. and 'wasted' sooo much $$$ in 3 years on rent! We are now in my uncles apt. and are FINALLY talking to contracters about houses!
We saved up a lot in less than 2 years and can move in the fall.
Of course its your decision, and I tell everyone how hard I kick myself in the *** for not taking this apt. in the 1st place. I never see my aunt and uncle cuz everyone works crazy hours, we have our own entrance, etc. It hasn't been bad @ all.
Thats my 'story'.
Good Luck to you!!

Re: Need Apt Advice

It's true... over years, it definitely does make a difference. The apt is a 2br, 1bath apt. That same apt would be $400 more a month, at least. That's $4800/year; $24,000 over 5 years....

We're definitely plan on investing into a home, just not right now... so it would help us out A LOT if we could save $ on the side.
