say dear mr and mrs. (last name) for the one where you only know a husbands name...

if it was the first time u met the 'guest' and its kind of a mutual understanding u dont know them... you can just address it to the one you invited.

I would just address the envelope the same way your wedding invite went out and inside the Thank You I would just write, 'Thank you both for ...' You don't need the first names as long as you are writing a personal message inside.

I would say to look towards their cards for help. In the situation of only knowing the husband's name, what did they sign their card to you as? Was the wife's name there? Or did they use Mr. and Mrs.? If you can't find the card, use Mr. and Mrs. ___?

Same goes for your friend with the guest. If she included her guest's name on the card, then you can use that as your clue for the thank you. If she only put her name, then probably the guest is more company than someone you'd have to specifically name in the to line of the card.

That's basically what I did -- I used the cards we received in order to know how to address the 'dear' so and so line in my TYs.
