Need camera recommendations (digital and point and shoot)

I used to have a Canon Elph (point and shoot) I loved its size it always took great pictures but it got stolen at a wedding in 2001 (argh)
So, in the time being we used Dh's digital camera until my birthday when he bought me a Sony 3.1 digital.

Our problem is it takes good close shots, but the focus sucks on farther pictures and I love that's its digital but I feel like it takes the crappiest pictures.

Can anyone offer some advice!

To me this picture would have looked better with another camera then ours

And it takes good outdoor and shamu is moving alot faster then me in the other picture

So for scenery it is good but when you have people it just isn't doing it for me.

Also, I always have insane red eye no matter what setting I have it on!

Cant you return it and get the Canon Elph again? I have that one and love it!

I have the Canon S400 Digital Elph and Mine was doing the same thing for awhile. My FI is a camera geek so I had him take a look at it for me and he changed something in the settings for me and now it works great.

Unforunately, he is in MA today on business but I will try and remember to ask him what he did and let you know.

WE have an Olympus C700 and the Sylus 300 (maybe 400) and are more than satisfied with both of them.

We have the Canon S400 Digital Elph also and love it.

I only use Canon cameras. I have alot of cameras and my Canons are the best...

another S400 owner. LOVE it!! Even the S200 we had was great. FI is a major geek and likes to keep up with the latest. he's thinking about getting the S500 now..
