Need clarification on tipping vendors

Need clarification on tipping vendors

I've heard that if the vendor owns the business, they do not need to be tipped, however I've seen other places (i.e., hair salons, etc) that readily accept tips from clients. I don't want to insult our vendors if they do a great job, but I also don't want to go overboard!

Can anyone clarify this for me, or tell me what you're planning to do?

Thanks

I think tipping is a way of saying that they did a great job, so i would tip even if they owned the company if you thought it was great service

I will not be tipping the vendors who own their own business. If they were working for someone and getting a salary, I would tip them to thank them for their work, but I feel that all of the money I am paying is going to them, and they should want to do good work beacause it is their business. Also, I believe that you get what you pay for, and all of the vendors that I have hired are expensive enough.

My brother was a maitre'd at Flowerfield and he said it's really nice if you make sure to tip your waitstaff directly. Lots of times if you just tip the maitre'd he pockets it and the waitstaff gets screwed.

You do not need to tip a business owner- although I am sure they will accept one. I do not believe in tipping just because I am expected to. I think someone should go above and beyound their normal dutites for a tip. I tip very well for resturant waittess since I know that they make under min. wage, catering hall staffs are paid differently. There is no way I can provide a few hundred dollars for the catering hall wait staff. If my waitress does a good job I will give her a tip.

I'm also a little confused about the tipping. When the hall requires an 18% gratuity charge, who is that going to? Does the maitre'd get part of that 18%, or you are supposed to be tipping the matrie'd seperately?

My hall told me the 18% is not a gratuity charge but a service charge. In other words, the money that the hall uses to PAY the employees but not tip them. I guess the per person $$$ just 'helps' pay for the staff. Who knows. I think it is just another way to squeeze more money out of brides.
I am giving tips based on performance, not cost.

Re: Need clarification on tipping vendors

I think the 18% is for the waitstaff...that's it...they are not getting $2.90 an hour like in a restaurant...

My friend worked at a catering hall in more than 5 years ago and she used to get paid by party...and for 5 hours of work she would get $80-100...

I was specifically told by my hall that the 18% does not include the maitre d nor the bridal assistant...but it DOES include the waitstaff and bartenders...

I'm almost to the point that I don't want to tip ANYONE, b/c I feel everyone has a hand stetched out...and like everyone is saying it should be above and beyond.... (but of course I will tip EVERYONE lol)

Waiters do get paid like more than restaruant waiters but if they do a really good job they deserve a tip-- the 18% goes to the owners and I guess the salaries. The maitre d's are making a lot of money and yet we are expected to tip them $2-3 a head. If you decide to tip the waiters give it to them directly because sometimes the maitre d's pocket the cash. My friends worked at a catering hall where even the money in the tip bowl at the coat check went to the owners not the coat check people.

Re: Need clarification on tipping vendors

I'm still not sure about my other vendors, but as far as the hall goes, I will tip the employees directly. I remember when I worked for a catering company, we were paid x per hour, and more often than not, the manager would pocket the tip for himself and not share with the other workers....I still get angry when I think about that!!!

maybe I am living in a bubble...but I would hope that if their are owners like that, the employees will not take it and find jobs elsewhere.

For this reason I have confidence that my halls owner treats the waitstaff well, b/c they are long term employees.

I even know that the waitstaff gets to taste all the food so that they have a better understanding of it...

things like this might let you in to ow your hall does business..

plus my cousin is friends with thte banquet manager...

Im confused if the 18% is not gratuity for the waitstafff and you suggest tipping personally so the maitr d doesnt pocket it i will end up spending my whole night tipping I mean there are alot of waitresses etc. and how do you keep track?

Re: Need clarification on tipping vendors

You don't have to tip the waitstaff-technically it is included in the 18%-they make more than restaurant waiters to make up for the differnce of not getting tips. If the waiter at my table or my parents table does an exceptional job I will tip the waiter myself. If you think they did a great job and want to do somehting like that give it to them and not the maitre d. I hope that clears it up.

I also have a tipping question. Do people really tip the banquet manager? I have read that in a bunch of wedding books/magazines.

Re: Need clarification on tipping vendors

How about the fact that we ALL work hard and earn different salaries. When I leave work no one hands me an extra $20+ because I showed up and did my job. I agree with Erica everyone has their hands stretching into my wallet and most of them are just doing their jobs. I have heard that Mark Kauffman gives a tip-suggest sheet. (he is my photographer and love his studio) But I do not agree with being asked to tip an assistant a certain amount just because the guy/gal is learning and doesn't earn much. When I was in working my 1st jobs no one was tipping me because I was learning PR. I took the job so I could learn, and then earn more. That is the way it works.
And I used to be a waitress at a Friendly's all through College and Part-time after that to make ends met. So I know ALL about working for tips. But some of the people you are supposed to tip are paid professionals, not under min. wage workers.

I used to work at Friendly's too!! For 5 years...talk about the worst tippers!!!

I worked at the Greenlawn restaurant, but it was closed down in 1996 or so...
