So I've found the dress I want to wear for my wedding. Here's the problem, it's the sample (discontinued), slightly dirty, especially on the bottom, and too big. I would need alterations and a good cleaning, plus it's plain so I would want to add some sparkle (I've been thinking about trying to make it a DIY with Hot-Fix rhinestones). Now I can get the dress under $100, but my dilemma is do I take that dress and get alterations, cleaning, and put sparkles on myself. Or do I just wait it out and continue looking for a dress that fits the same way but I can order in my size????? I can only hold that dress for 1-2 more days, so what should I do??? My FH and I don't have a RH or a date yet, but we really are planning on getting married this coming Fall.
Any advice/help/opinions would be great!!!
TIA

Re: Need Dress Advice
It sounds like too many changes to me. I don't know how big the dress is on you, but any more than 2 sizes is difficult to alter. I'd just find a dress in your size with the right amount of 'dazzle' for you.

Ok I think the dress shop should def give a much bigger discount than $100.Also I feel that depending on how much work it needs to be done I would shop around

Re: Need Dress Advice
The dress is originally just under $300 and I could get it for somewhere in the $80s. Also, it's a plain dress, satin, A-line. And a little more about the sizing. It's a 14. I tried on another dress (same designer) in a 10 and it was too tight. So I'd fit somewhere in the 12 with still height alterations (I'm short).

Re: Need Dress Advice
if you're getting the dress under 100 i dont think it could hurt to try--
but i agree with the post above and how many sizes you can size it down--did you try it on?

Re: Need Dress Advice
I would factor in the cost of alterations and cleaning the dress and see if its worth the money, sometimes cleaning the dress costs more than the dress.
I think its a good bargan but if you're looking for something with more bling I would check other designers and see if its worth your time and effort.

Re: Need Dress Advice
Yes, I tried it on. But I needed clips in the back to hold it up. If it didn't have clips, it would have fallen right down to the ground. I did go to Renate's yesterday to try on dresses and found one with a similar fit with sparkle. It was a little much sparkle and embroidery for me, but even with that, it cost over $1000!!! Now, I understand how expensive wedding dresses can cost, but it wasn't the one I wanted, and my parents can't pay for the wedding, but my mom wants to pay for the dress. She doesn't have a lot of money though so I am trying to save money. And even though she said that dress was amazing on me and I mentioned the price, she said that it's whatever I want, regardless, but I just can't do that to her. But trust me, I'm not looking for a dress that's under $100, I just stumbled on it and liked it before knowing the price!

Re: Need Dress Advice
I dont know IMO it sounds like it needs soo much work so how could it be the dress your in love with ya know? If it was THE ONE I dont think youd want to do so much to change it because thats what your doing. =/ With the adding sparkles and thinking about doing it with hotfix rhinestones. Again IMO its a wedding dress that is once in a lifetime do you really want to use hotfix rhinestones on your wedding gown??? Its not a dress your wearing to some random party, its your wedding. All eyes on you, all camera on you...
Maybe your amazing at designing (Im DIY challenged lol) BUT if you go to RK Bridal in the city they have A LOT of dresses for UNDER $1000 that are STUNNING and can be ordered in your size, clean and wont need to add anything...

Re: Need Dress Advice
I don't think you need to worry too much about the bottom since it will probably be altered. But I guess it depends on how dirty and where you take it to clean - they have to do a good job. Alterations don't sound too bad on the dress - definitely doable but can be costly.
Like the girls said, I think you should probably get estimates first to make sure this is worth it.
Also, make sure you feel confident as a DIY....or I would first do the sparkles, then clean and alter if you are satisfied with the sparkles...just in case.

Re: Need Dress Advice
I wouldn't do this...JMO. David's Bridal has good prices, and like someone else said RK Bridal in the city has prices that are $400-$500 less than other places.
It just sounds like you want too many changes...I'd keep looking.

Re: Need Dress Advice
Before you buy the dress, can you price around at some seamstresses and find out, ballpark range how much the alterations would cost/adding anything? That might help give you an idea.

Re: Need Dress Advice
honestly dry cleaning can go up to 200, so yu might as well just buy a new dress if the original price is just under 300, jmo

Re: Need Dress Advice
I feel like with all the alterations it could wind up costing more + being more stressful than shopping around a little bit more and finding out what else is out there.
But if you absolutely love it and have to have it, you should buy it, because it could be gone.
