Need help fast: Is it acceptable to put Mr. Joe Brown & Guest on outside envelope to mail out?

I am in a rush & I'm cutting it real close. I am looking over the list I sent to printer before giving him the 'go ahead.' Is it acceptable to write 'Mr. Joe Brown & Guest' on the outside envelope I mail out? That is how I had written them out. I received one from someone like that recently, myself. Please help.

I think you should write Mr. Joe Brown on the outside and inside write Mr. Joe Brown & Guest.

Re: Need help fast: Is it acceptable to put Mr. Joe Brown & Guest on outside envelope to mail out?

Before I was married, I received invites that way as well - but I don't think that's the proper way, etiquette wise. You didn't mention if you are also having inside envelopes? That would make the difference here.

The outside envelope, when you are addressing it to a single person, should just be in that name only:

Mr. Joe Brown

The inside envelope would spell out whether a 'guest' is invited or not. It would be proper to put on the inside envelope:

Mr. Joe Brown
Ms. Anne Green

If you don't have an idea of the guests name, try and find it out. If they truly are single and you are giving them the option to bring a guest, the inner envelope would say

Mr. Joe Brown and Guest

& Guest should not go on the outside. Just on the inner envelope.

Me and Jimmy got a couple of invitations for weddings this year and nobody addressed inner envelope. They left that one blank.

Well, thank you everyone for your help. I guess the ones I received weren't correct. I'm going to fix my list quickly and put the '& guest' on the inner envelope. Thank you again for the quick responses!
